GW2's going to have open-world PvP? Screw 'em, then. They just lost a sale.

@The Ogre

I'd be more concerned if a faction based game with a heavy pvp option didn't have open world pvp servers.

I believe the majority of us are sick of having 12 year old kids run up on us and gank us then screaming "TROLOLOLOLOLOL" into the chat box over and over. They're the sorts that hang outside, in low level areas, stalking and killing people who can't put up a fight (for obvious reasons).

It happened in the game 2moons, for me. All servers were "Open PvP enabled". I was trying to level my Level 20 mage, and sure enough, some level 50 Warrior comes screaming out of nowhere and just splatters me, then camps where I died, waiting for me to resurrect. I personally believe the worst of humanity exists on PvP servers, as they only live to bully and make the lives of other players miserable.

I believe that is the fear of the above topic poster. As long as they have the staples of PvE servers, and are able to toggle PvP on and off on those servers, we'll be ok.

@MotionX

Guild Wars 2 isn't exactly faction-based, is it? Considering all the player races are on the same side.

As near as I can tell from the actual article, they're still talking about "world vs world PvP" when they say "open-world combat," not open PvP within a server.

@The Ogre Someone didn't read the article, or doesn't keep up with current development.

They're talking about the World versus World, a large scale PvP instance separate from the PvE.

@The Ogre I might be wrong, but i'm pretty sure the open-world PvP is the World vs World thing.

@The Ogre

When talking of open world PVP in GW2 your really talking about WvWvW (RvR, 3 realms battling it out for a week, than rotated).

There will be no way of killing fellow players without purposely going into the RvR instance (not really fair to call it that tho as its 4 linked maps) called the mists. No information so far on how this is done, however my guess is your standard menu tool.

I wish game reporters would stop titling it as world pvp as its causing alot of confusion with people who havnt followed every single strand of info about the game.

@The Ogre No, the game is not going to have open world PvP, although I could understand the wording being confusing. A "World" seems to be their word for "server," so when they say "World vs World vs World" PvP it basically means players from a single server banding together to battle players from other servers. There will be designated PvP zones with various objectives for players to fight over, and presumably holding these objectives will provide benefits to your server.

If you've played Dark Age of Camelot, their description of this sounds a lot like the frontiers.

There is also going to be "organized" or arena based PvP. In this all characters are automatically bumped up to the level cap and given (I'm assuming) standardized gear so that everyone is put on an even playing field.

There is no "open world" PvP. No one will be able to just run up to you and kill you unless you while you're running around town or leveling your character (unless you enter a PvP area, of course).

@Ehra Sorry, I messed up that last paragraph. What I meant to say is that no one will be able to just run up and kill you while you're in a town or leveling unless you consciously enter a PvP area.

@The Ogre Hey there, fear not! GW2 will definitely *not* have open-world PvP, the comment in the story was the text version of saying one word when you mean another! ;-) Thanks for saying something to bring it to our attention though -- it's fixed now.

@The Ogre I don't think its gonna be like the PVP we know. Either way, I wouldn't write them off just yet.

In other news at least we got some scraps of info on beta!!! This year? I'm kinda stoked about that.

Yea exciting news indeed!

It did however send me into a deep state of misery that ill have to wait till next year to play. There doesnt even seem like much hope for open beta.

Hahaha.. tell me about it. I'm guessing Apr. of 2012 will be actual release, but if it takes longer than so be it. I'd rather them take their time and get it right than rush it out for all the people who wont stay long enough to enjoy it anyway.

@thedude657 and @The Ogre and @MotionX and others
there have been no mentioning of PvP servers and there is no reason for it as there is no faktion conflikt in GW2, and no race conflikt. All players in PvE are on the same side! PvP servers in Gw2 would be only a little less surprising than if they dropped they B2P model.

the PvP solution (besides struktured instanced PvP) is a server vs server vs server setup, on 4 huge maps, with a weekly (maybe biweekly) change of opponents. Thats what this article is talking about when they talks about open world PvP. Properly the Word Open world PvP is a bit misleading as it is about the WvsWvsW pvp.

It should also be said that, yes, dungeons do have a specific story mode. Rather, story mode isn't really an extension of your character's personal story. Some believed, for example, that you'd have to get to a certain part of your personal story in order to experience a dungeon's story mode, but they clarified that dungeons and the personal story system are separate.

"I’m not sure we want to include damage meters or things like that. I think they maybe tend to focus on the wrong things with everybody concerned about min/maxing things. There are lots of things you just can’t measure, like the DPS somebody is doing, are they helping towns players get back up and that sort of thing. We want to avoid DPS meters"

Best thing I've read about GW2 yet.
