I think it is interesting to play a game from early on. I wasn't part of closed beta so I never saw the game in its messiest stages. What is interesting is that a game will have all sorts of changes and I will totally forget about it. If you asked me what was different today then when LOTRO first came out I would say F2P and name the areas they added later. There are tons more changes that have been implemented from graphics to gameplay but you get used to the changes so much you forget about them.

@madcartoonist It's quite normal. The slow changes are the ones we notice the least. Just as in the real world, if you compare what the game is like now with a long time ago the changes seem dramatic, but to have lived through them it's a slow creep.
