Just responding on the tid-bit above, since I haven't had a chance to read through the interview, but it makes a great point about full-voice over versus text. It may not matter much whether or not you read or hear the guard saying it.

But once your in the house, and you can actually hear the parents, and not just see some floating text, including the little girl, all the way up to the point of the pirates kidnapping and dragging her away, that's sure to tug a little on anyone.

Of course, it won't matter if the voice acting is terribad, but I'm more than sure Arena.net is aware how that can affect a story.

It matters a lot whether I read or hear what the guard is saying. That's the difference between me actually understanding whats going on or me just skipping over a block of text, skimming for objectives, and following quest markers.

For me personally, voice work, even bad voice work, is infinitely better than quest text.

Oh, I can agree there, but I mean within the context of the event itself. Whether or not you got there by listening to the Guard, you'll still be hearing the ambient contextual dialogue of the parents, child, and the kidnappers. And hearing it, instead of reading it, is going to affect people at least a little. But voice actors who can't make it sound like its urgent, is definitely going to ruin it.

I mean, just imagine Ben Stein doing the voice of the father! Er... never mind, I'd actually like to hear that...

Great interview! TapRepeatedly is a very cool site and I'm impressed at how in-depth they got.

I had to laugh when he mentioned Shiro. I don't mind if voice work isn't -stellar-, but I had to play through Factions with voices off to be able to take the story seriously and I still feel kinda bad about that. >_>

You should be, having played through Factions, it would of been horrible not to have Shiro talking! He brings humor to bubonic-esque plagues that no one else could...

@Irem I had the same problem with EQ2. Good grief. Their voices would have been excellent in WoW, but semi-realistic graphics with completely cartoonish voiceovers just made EQ2 feel like Pee-wee's Playhouse Online.

The funny thing is.... I didn't think the voice work was that bad and everytime someone says it was bad I just think "huh? why don't I think that?" I'm going to assume its because I watch too many cartoons and the voicework was similar to that.

Full voice over was the stanard ten years ago, the MMO community is just not getting where it should be, can't wait for GW2, the true Wow killer cometh

I have to disagree. Voice acting was a standard ten years ago for single player games. MMOs require much more in terms of content than a single player game ever does, and is overall more expensive to produce and maintain than any single player game. So voice acting was a luxury and used for key characters in special events when necessary.

There's a reason why only two MMOs are boasting full voice acting right now, and both are being backed rather heavily by their publishers. MMOs are moving at the same pace as any single player game.

And please refrain from labelling anything as "WoW-killer". As much as I don't enjoy WoW like I did before, and as much as I love Guild Wars, there is zero reason why a B2P game would ever kill a P2P MMO, there is room for both.
