Hey, Einstein: How can an identity monitoring and protection company guard your personal information if it doesn't have said information? I'm just saying.

And finally, how about a little common sense? After this fiasco Sony's currently embroiled in, do you think they'd risk another PR disaster by partnering with a sleazy outfit that's going to sell your info rather than protect it?

Somehow I doubt someone working for Sony would have said that it was inexcusable that they lacked firewalls - as I did yesterday. But I can't help chuckling over how you decided not to to address what I was saying and instead chose to try and go after me personally. After all, when you can't refute the message the only remaining tactic is to attack the messenger.

I think he's just saying its paradoxical that the protection for stolen personal information and identity is to provide even more information about not only yourself but your family members. What's more, this is supposed to bring comfort but for all we know their databases are just as secure as Sony's. I don't really know how the company does their job, this is the first time i heard of such a thing.

A fair answer. I did some research on them and their service sounds reasonable. Actually, it sounds like it's a cut above the comparable companies. Check out the link I provided above, which incidentally is to an independent outfit that specializes in comparing the various identity protection companies out there. (In other words, it's not someplace that's on Debix's payroll.)

The bottom line is that if you don't trust the outfit you're not being forced to use it. You can use any company you want or none at all. Sony will only pay for Debix, but that's not surprising since they probably worked out a volume discount. I can't blame them for that since this whole fiasco is already going to end up costing them billions.

I'm not a PSN subscriber, though -- just SOE and I'm getting pretty frustrated that there's so little news about what they're going to be doing for us. If they offer a Debix account to SOE folks, I'll probably jump on it. I'd been thinking about LifeLock before, but never pulled the trigger.

Lifelock is a joke. They're the company run by the dillweed who put his social security number on city buses to prove how great the company was, only to have his identity completely and thoroughly stolen.

Debix would love 50 million accounts and wow what all that personal information would be worth to them. YOu knew Sony would pull crap like this. Notice Sony wont help you if you use a different company?

Trading one tyrant for another is silly. Only the gov gets that information . I would never give a company all and every piece of personal info.

Sony cant even keep a phone number safe , im not going to take there advice on how to protect information.

No Debix isnt going to get my info to do as they please. Read fine print on Debix site. Its all theirs forever once you give it to them.

Ah, that was what I was waiting for. Having had other services that had information hacked/stolen/whatever this seems like the route they usually go (even had it happen with health insurance). Unfortunately I will have to REMEMBER to cancel it after the year.

Debix, LifeLock, and TrustedID are all comparable services, all legit, and all need the same information to keep tabs on activity.

People cried about getting services to protect themselves from unauthorized activity, and now they are offering it for free for a year, and people are crying conspiracy? Really?

I don't even know what to think about some of the reactions to this.
Sony can't win for losing. Just get PSN back up and people will return to their normal selves I suppose...

Stores like to give out discount vouchers for buying something. The vouchers make you think you're getting some nice discount for your next purchase. However, the store knows very well there's a lot of people who never end up using their vouchers before the vouchers expire.

Similarly, a lot of people won't be registered for the identity theft coverage. Either they can't be bothered to go through the process of signing up, or they didn't know about it. This is just a cheap way for Sony to do some PR show-and-tell.

I say if Sony want me to forgive them they shall send me 10 free games for any of there consoles ps2 ps3 or psp there are some nice titles I want to get my hands on to my collection. Like japanese version of Atelier Rorona 2 or US version of Growlanser Generations Delux disc ^.^ to name a few hehe hey I can always wish right.

As someone who actually works in the fraud/identity theft industry, I have nothing but bad things to say about these types of companies. They're basically a scam that over complicates your life.

You're not liable for fraud. Ever. If you check your credit report (which is free, once a year, from the three big bureaus.. So you could check every four months) you can easily protect yourself. Once a bank is alerted to fraud accounts(which are increasingly rare due to advancement in detection), they remove any negative report with the bureaus and your credit is back to normal.

The problem seems to stem from the fact that some people can't be bothered to protect themselves and are demanding that Sony do it for them. This is really the only way to attend to that demand...
However, you are quite correct. If you are on top of your own financial well-being, you don't need these types of additional automated monitoring services.

And just because you're not liable for fraud, that doesn't mean it's free for you to fight it when it happens. What happens when the bank doesn't believe you?

At the end of the day, virtually any service that you can purchase is always something you could do cheaper and possibly better yourself. Housekeepers? You could do a better job (but probably wouldn't) and it's a hassle to schedule them and arrange for keys, etc. Does that make a housekeeping service a scam? Heck, there are even people who will stand in line for you at the DMV. Are they a scam? It's just the nature of the service industry.
