Aventurine has posted its most recent Darkfall activity report, and it covers quite a bit of ground.
The first highlight is on the studio's worldbuilder team and its recent work remaking dungeons and clan cities and testing a new lighting system which should allow you to see yourself getting ganked in a brand-new light (rimshot).
The art team, meanwhile, has completed numerous new assets including some truly towering trees, flags and banners, and ruins. On top of this, Darkfall players will have some new enemies to slay in the form of newly created monsters like the Imp. To finish this off, players will soon be able to pretty up their characters with the addition of fabulous new hairstyles.
The key piece of information offered is about the new siege system, which has been entirely revamped and is ready for testing.
For the full onslaught of information on all this and more -- including interactive map changes, blood spatter behavior (oh boy!) and racial/capital quests -- head on over to the full piece on Darkfall's official site.

Is this game still going strong? Didn't I read they were doing an xpac soon?
I played it for about 10 hours a year ago, and I've always wanted to try it again.

It always reminded me of a MMO Elder Scrolls. Open PvP kind of sucks but it still seems worth a try.

in my opinion has always been stable, meaning....i see the same amount of people in the same areas, and, i see no people in other areas. it's honestly a great game but i don't play anymore because of the 'leveling'. if i resubbed i would never be as good as another player, that is epic fail to me.

I wold play this game till my fingers bleed if it weren't for the open world ganking. Yeah, some might like it but I don't. Tried it, was fun "ganking noobs" and taking their "Shiet" while "our doodz" were in "their base" but yeah, still not for me.

Did the game always look like this? I don't recall it looking as nice.

The core problem I see with this game is the combat is super twitch based which is fine BUT the effectiveness of that super twitch game play is totally dependent on grinding up skills on a really old school style PvE grind.
Even with the off line meditation it is still pretty long and drawn out.
This promotes all sorts of old school problems like AFK grinding, macroing ext.
This game has a really great world design and the open PvP does add an element of danger that modern MMOs are missing but the mechanics themselves are an issue.
I played this game about a month, I was in a very good guild guild but I'm on the fence with it.
I was really un-impressed with the old school quake style fighting combined with an eternally long, mindless PvE grind. Standing around shooting at mobs for hours just to gain .50 in a weapon skill is no fun.
One or the other please.
Judging from the number of players in game, the effect IMHO is that this game is only able to maintain a small core player base.

@Titan1
That was pretty much my experience with the game as well. Spending my time grinding PvE to PvP.
I can go to any number of MMOs for that type of gameplay. Why would a player want to come to a PvP centric game and still be shoved into same style of level progression?
