Correction, it could topple everyone's mmo not just The Old Republic. The only other solution is making it a console only mmo so that both franchises can exist together.

Its funny that the analysts say Star wars mmo's haven't historically done very well even though Star Wars name is huge, while saying that a Mass effect mmo will do way better. If the name didn't help SW why would it help ME?

Having an already existing popular IP for your mmo is really only helpful in advertising. Its all about how you use that IP not how famous are awesome your IP is.

And of course a game where you don't have to pay any royalties could make more money then one where you did.

You need to understand the key point of his statement...

"given the dilutive nature of the LucasArts royalty."

George Lucas takes a huge chunk of any and all money from anything made that has "Star Wars" on it. No matter how many subscribers SW:TOR may end up getting, the fact that Lucas owns the IP and only lets people have a crack at it if he gets his cut up front and guaranteed, EA's potential profit on the game is very, very limited.

However, if EA own's the IP to something, they can make shed-load more cash even if a ME MMO was less "successful" in the conventional sense.

So given that Lucas gets paid first and no matter what, SW:TOR needs a huge amount of subscribers to stay up and running, let alone be profitable.

These kinds of agreements are why marginally successful games seem to shut down out of the blue: borderline predatory royalty agreements.

@rhorle They said star wars games in general don't do well. Star wars has always been super popular but their games generally aren't. There are only a couple exceptions (xwing/tiefighter and kotor). Time has proven that it's extremely difficult to get star wars fans to actually buy star wars games while mass effect fans already buy mass effect games because it's only a game and a great number of mass effect fans have expressed their interest in a mass effect MMO.

Plus lucasarts takes a chunk of money from anything with the star wars name on it while mass effect is bioware's own IP.

I think I understood it well enough when I wrote "And of course a game where you don't have to pay any royalties could make more money then one where you did. "

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that you'll make more money when you can keep it all for yourself instead of having to give some of it away to another person.

@Yog

It still doesn't work. Two well made games against the entire span of SW games? A name doesn't make a game, the game does. Its why good star wars games are great and bad ones are bad. If bioware did a DA2 to ME you can bet it wouldn't be as popular. Heck even some people hated ME2 vs ME1.

The point again is that a name or IP doesn't mean a game is going to be good. And people are much more willing to throw money at a good game then a bad one, names don't sell anymore. Quality does.

So it's likely to do better than an MMO which won't do very well at all? Impressive stuff.

This is only so much BS. It can top the performance of an MMO that isn't even out yet? And considering there's no evidence that work has even begun on a ME MMO, we're talking, what, 2015?

Though I guess what he's really saying, to give him the benefit of the doubt over such a statement, that the LucasArts royalty is so stupidly high and BioWare wouldn't have to pay anyone else for their own IP.

That still doesn't equal more money, just more potential money out of every unit sold, of a hypothetical MMO versus one that hasn't been released.

As always, I wish I got paid to blather so uselessly, though I'll definitely continue to blather uselessly for free.

Not too hard to topple something that hasn't even been released yet, and probably *probably* won't be released this year, but I see your point Massively.

The historical weakness of Star Wars games? Maybe they were weak because most SW games aren't made by BioWare.

@driler234

I have to say I agree with this.

If it wasn't for the Bioware involvement, I doubt I'd even consider the game to begin with. For me it's the hope it will be a massively expanded version of the KotOR games that makes this an option.

Of course since I didn't like Mass Effect, their name won't be a factor if an MMO does come out for this.

Hide yo' kids, hide yo' wife, they're analyzing errybody out here.

...But seriously, all of my money, as long as the people who did Dragon Age 2 are NOT involved, and Drew K. from ME1 is the writer.

Rolling Drell F Biotic for great justice.

As much as I love Mass effect this guy needs to stop using mind altering drugs.

TOR is done as well as i appears to be is going to be very very hard for even Blizzard to compete with.

I'm not saying that Bioware may not use a Mass effect MMO to try and compete with Titan, but I'm pretty sure they will already have a cash cow on their hands with TOR.
