A while back, Star Trek Online's development team asked players to submit their entries for the next generation of the starship Enterprise. If you're at all familiar with the years of fiction, of course, you know that designing the next incarnation of the Federation's flagship is no small feat -- not only do you have to come up with a craft that still adheres to the designs set forth by countless previous ships, but you also have to make something that looks futuristic and advanced on its own.
The contest's winners have finally been announced, and it looks like players were more than up to the challenge, producing a variety of ships that would make an excellent example for the ship of the line. The winning entry also includes a comparison of the new ship's profile compared with its famous predecessors, a treat for both Star Trek Online fans and fans of the series in general. Our congratulations to all the winners and runners-up.

Cool stuff. Though first place pick looks pretty weak to me. Especially compared to the 2nd place. Maybe the design is cool, but who could tell with the weak sauce image? Silhouettes?
Still all and all, very nice.

Don't care for the winning design, but many of the other ones are really amazing!

Very nicely done! I really like almost all of them.

Cryptic stumbled again, unfortunately, in communicating clearly with the playerbase.
There was a vote held on the official forums, asking players to choose their favorite design from among the submissions. Unfortunately, it was never made clear that the players' preferences would have /no/ guaranteed effect on the contest's outcome.
As a result, the majority of player votes favored a starship design which not only did not win, but which didn't even make it into the runner-ups list.
So, now, a loud faction are screamingly unhappy on the forums, behaving poorly as onlyinternet posters can, and its casting a pall over the proceedings.
Yes, perhaps the players should've known that, since current franchise co-owner CBS reserved the right to approve the winning design, that straight-across player/fan voting could never ensure the winner ...
... but Cryptic failed to make clear from the beginning that the poll was simply an opinion poll, and not an actual vote affecting the decision.

I prefer the second place ship to the one featured here which I assume is the winner?
The winning ship is triangular given all the star trek enterprise ships have been more curvy this seems to be contradictory. The second place entry while a little "fat" keeps the curves.

@FrostPaw I completely agree. While the design doesn't look bad by any standard, it just doesn't fit in with the usual Trek style ship designs.
But looking at the site itself (linked above), I think the winning design may actually a different one. Which looks more Trekky.

The EVE version of design-a-ship was much more interesting, imo.

Did Suricata enter the contest? Did he place? Which was his design?

Was hoping Vektor's design would win. Oh well.

@mysecretid That's what people get for not reading the official rules.
They stated many times that the voting would likely not effect the decision of who wins. Also, with the voting site being broken, the most popular ship may only have won at vote because of a select few people voting again and again.

Echo a lot of the other posts where I don't really like the winner. The second palce would have been a better choice.

I actually think the First Place ship was well picked. I also appreciated that the ship itself was actually bigger than the Galaxy-class, unlike the Sovereign.

Wow. The player designed Enterprise-F is slick! As good as anything the legendary Okuda could do, and better looking than some of the ships the "professionals" have done for STO.
Just goes to show you, give your player base the tools, and they can create wonders.

This winner is a travesty. The community's votes over at Star Trek Online had nothing to do with this selection. This ship cannot even be found in the listing for highest rated or most votes listing here:

Clearly, Cryptic only selected this ship design as it is so vague and non-specific that there would be no intellectual property issues. The design is also highly morphable into whatever Cryptic would like to make it.
All of the vastly superior designs were very specific.
You suck, Cryptic!

@mysecretid Then those players are morons of the highest caliber. On average less than 10% of a game's playerbase makes use of the forums (whereas far more people make use of the site itself not to mention that the launcher had linked to the site and not the thread). Those self-entitled bastards thought at less than 10% they somehow had the right to dictate the entire proceedings?
Screw'em the pricks. I bathe myself in their tears.

I actually quite like the wining piece. It's definitely up-keeping the well-defined Enterprise aesthetic, but manages to look as if its more technologically advanced than the E-class, the last ship Picard piloted. Can't wait to see it turned into a pretty 3-D image.
