@Threecubed "Tanking never originated from stupid AI, the concept of defending is not hard for most people to understand."

Tanking as we define it in MMOS did develop out of exploiting stupid AI, and cannot be considered without acknowledging the arbitrary prop that combat healing created. It wasn't until EQ that we started stacking up behind a meat shield and using bucket brigades to keep that wall maintained.

The tanking we have in MMOs is not derived intuitively. What you are describing is misdirection, not tanking. No neandertal was taking the brunt of the mammoth attack for the other cavemen. They certainly didn't do it while being kept alive in real-time by a bunch of shamans. Pack hunters do not assign tanks.

The hammer and anvil concept can work as a model structure in many situations, but you can't shoehorn such a general concept into absolute mechanics and expect to have anything that isn't an unsustainable skill bubble.

I'm a human being. Show me a wall of hoplites, and I'll flank it or trump it with a phalanx. Show me a phalanx and I'll face it with heavy cavalry. If can't do these things becuause of the 'rules', then it's just a cage match, and that holds no interest for me.

"How do THEY know who is the healer? What are the tells, a droid floating around, green hand-sparkles? "

That's the thrill of misdirection, tactics, strategy... the art of war. You can try to hide your healers all that you want, but I know that they're there and need to be taken out first. I won't give up till I find them.

Tanking can work fine in pvp if they design it like league of legends did it. Basicly just getting in the way off the opponents skillshots while your team is nuking them down or taunting a opponent forcing him to melee you for a few seconds.

But yeah I know that's not possible with a point and click mmo.

Rift and WAR does the same thing. But remember many of the Devs in Rift and SWTOR are from WAR including Gabe Amatangelo.

This is good, but it still does nothing to stop the 'focus firing' tactics everyone uses now anyways.

So a tank taunts one guy? Everyone else with Ventrilo will still be burning down the healer anyways. It just lessens one's person dps vs the target and the tank tanking 50% of the damage still won't be able to survive a group burndown.

But it's better than not having it for sure.

The majority of the ideas presented in this article simply regurgitate what other MMOs have done.

You p*ssi3s that cry about gear (PvE vs. PvP) are stuck in WOW mode, or any other game that came after WOW. Go back to DAOC and realize that they not only got the spec. situation right but the itemization correct.

Having most of the viable pieces (for PvE and PvP - often the same gear) being crafted by high level crafters is a very nice thing. Sure, there are PvE drops that could be marginally better but you weren't gimped by not having them. There were many other things that they got right.

However, too many MMO players think WOW invented the wheel that we now ride upon and too many game companies try to be the next WOW instead of making a good game.

The downside is the players are too stupid to realize they deserve better. Instead, they bicker over how much like WOW a current or in development game is. WOW sucks, and is only good for retard button pushers with no real gaming ability.
