Call me what you will, but I am excited for this game. If we were truly honest with ourselves, we would realize that, with few exceptions, we are all the same character in most MMOs anyway. So Marvel saying that we are going to play as iconic characters works for me. Granted it makes it less MY game, but that will certainly not make it less fun or exciting.

@Larry Everett You need to play different games if that is your experience. Same class /= Same character

As cool as it would be to be a special snowflake in MMOs, in the majority of MMOs (especially the most popular ones) your charcter isn't that special. There are, of course, exceptions to the rule, but for the most part your class determines what you look like. Let's be real, though. Uniqueness is not the only thing tha can make MMOs awesome.

@Larry Everett Agreed. There are no "unique" characters in MMOs. I'm currently playing Rift and my Warrior and Cleric, having gone through the exact same quests (no multiple leveling paths in Rift I'm afraid) are lock stock and barrel the same person.

I suppose I could use my imagination and PRETEND that they're in fact somehow different (when story-wise they're clearly not). But if I'm going to use my imagination I'd much rather PRETEND that I'm the Supreme Ruler of the Universe on a divine request from God (who worships me BTW, not the other way around) to eradicate the obnoxious grouping of slavering man-children known as "your average gamer, especially the kind that posts on gaming related internet media". Go big right?

@Larry Everett If you are just talking looks, then you really are playing the wrong games. DCUO, CO, and CoH have extensive appearance options. In order to look like another player you almost have to try to look like them.

I see what you are saying (stats and all that), but there is a :::insert my sorta imaginary number here:: large audience that want that feel. It's kinda like playing a text MMO; I mean, stat-wise, yeah, but humans are visual creatures and a good many of them, even PvPers who just want to create "Mr. Ugly face" want to put their stamp on the world.

It's sorta like buying a car; you can subscribe to what Henry Ford wanted when he started the company: You can have any color car as long as it's a black model T. Sure, the car gets you around, but enough people started wanting different colors and different configurations, even if they stemmed from the same 4-wheeled/1-engine model.

I mean, we might as well all have the same computer/graphic card/monitor set-up, no?

Everyone above me: you all know damn well you will play this game, in spite of the fact it'll be f2p and in spite of the fact you can only play existing characters. So just stop kidding yourselves.

@Lenn

The iconics only would have put me in the "no" if not for the f2p which will see me trying it out...if it had been p2p and iconics though I would not be playing. Playing existing characters in any MMO really just turns me off.

Talk about contradicting yourselves.

On one hand it will be more mature and I can take it as dark as I want to, but only so much as is allowed by Marvel canon. This will allow for freedom for players to play the game they want.

What?

@tk421242 The Marvel universe is plenty dark, so there should be lots of freedom.

I'm glad that they're really trying to stand out and innovate. If nothing else, it'll be worth the price of entry to see for oneself how it plays. Besides, playing the actual Marvel heroes means it's just like the MMO in Runaways. ;)

Ah well. Kneejerkers gonna jerk. I bet all the ranters here are many of the same people who decry the lack of innovation and are begging for an MMO that dares to really shake up the dominant paradigm. (Not all of them though, because I for one like to bemoan the lack of innovation from time to time.)

Given that they're talking about an exhaustive list of possible characters to play, each with the capacity to make choices in the narrative that affect outcomes, I'm inclined to think you won't play a single, static character, rather that character choice is going to be scenario based. That would mean no open world environments, which may mean it's not really truly an MMO by some metrics. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it is a thing to consider. It also highly suggests that player progression isn't tied to just your character but is measured in other ways. That's a really new idea in the MMO space. and one that could be quite liberating.

PS- Bendis later in the video gets pulled aside for a chat and mentions A) Nova is also going to be playable, as another example aside from Squirrel Girl of the less well known playable characters, and B) Talks about a player using Squirrel Girl to beat up Doom, played by another player, implying villains will in fact be playable, at the very least in PvP situations.

It all sounds good to me. And yes, I DO want to play as Dr. Strange, Luke Cage and She Hulk, not some bollixed-up versions of same. Ha!

GO FOR IT BOYS, WE'RE WITH YOU ALL THE WAY!

All they had to do was make a game like DCUO, just BIGGER and with the different things DCUO doesnt have like secret identities and more non-combat stuff.

What they are creating is what they started to with Champions ONLINE, before it switched to the champions IP.

We dont play as villians. Its a hero only game.

We play AS ICONIC HEROS??? This right here just cut out about 80-90% of people that were looking foward to playing this game. How can you have hundreds of thousands of players, or lets say 10000+ per server, and NOT have duplicates? easy, INSTANCING - which will effectively ruin the game so we'd be playing witgh an instabnced group of 100 or so players.

They need to WAKE UP and realize F2P games are doing "OK" because of the LESS THAN 5% that spend tons of money in the item shops. Thats it. Most play for the free content and never spend a dime.

I'm PRAYING they :

a) Have a subscription model
b) have villians
c)let us play AS characters we create, just like DCUO

If they copied dcuo EXACTLY AND just added thier own IP characters, it would have a million subs easily after 2-3 mos

But since they are dumb, it will FAIL

All this time they worked on SHSO they could have been working on MUO

A kid needs to read a comic first, not watcha cartoon show/movie and THEN read comics.

Also, if they have ANYTHING "ultimate" in the game, at least 50% of potential players WILL NOT play , since the ultimate canon is a joke and needs to end asap

S! - go play dcuo, co AND COH - AND see what real SH games are like

Wowee. Lookit that hyperbole go!

They're going for a different market than the other Super MMOs. It's a wise choice. You don't like it? Fine. Heaps of others don't like it? Still fine. They don't want the money of people who are content with what they've got. They want a fresher group of players who don't like current MMOs.

Also, how many subs does DCUO have? Don't be bloody ridiculous. (And I'm someone who likes DCUO....)

@(Unverified) Well, look WHO is all-KNOWING. It's LIKE you already PLAYED the game to HAVE such a STRONG opinion about it, THROWING OUT made-up numbers AND all. AND you MUST BE a true comics FAN because you WRITE AS if you WERE in a COMIC.

I for one am not interested in playing a Marvel version of DCUO, CoH or CO. The last thing we would want, in this day and age of endless cloning and lack of innovation, is hundreds of people like yourself crying "DCUO clone!!11!" every time a new superhero MMO hits the market.

@(Unverified) Just to be clear: There's a totally different Gazillion Studio (Secret Society, what used to be known as Gargantuan) working on MUO. Amazing Society built/is building SHSO. So that's a bit like complaining NCsoft should have quit working on City of Heroes to make GW2. :P Different studios altogether.

Personally, as a kid and a bookworm, I didn't read comics first. I got hooked on the Star Wars movies, then jumped to comics, THEN jumped to games (and that was a long time ago now :D).

I hear what you guys are saying, though. There's a reason I still love CoH, and character customization is a large part of it.

Generalize much? Lots of personal opinions thrown in there and spoken as if you represent some large group..you don't. thant said, I'm not particularly excited by this reveal, for many reasons, but I will give them the benefit of the doubt and see what it is they are coming up with.. with so little info, it really is pointless to start claiming grand fail or otherwise at present.
