All three clips are heavily focused on combat and feature several player characters showing off their lighting-quick martial arts skills, weapon prowess, and vertical leaps that would make Michael Jordan jealous. Speaking of weapons, we get glimpses of what looks to be a katana, a few fireballs, and a battle axe so large that it could conceivably be called a battleship. The vids also show off environments ranging from dank caves and dark dungeons to a decidedly sunny beach. Check out all the details after the cut, or head to MMO Culture for a bit of commentary.

Blade & Soul has taken a bit of a back seat to TERA and ArcheAge when it comes to Korean MMO news lately, but thanks to a trio of beta videos uploaded to YouTube by the game's enterprising testers, we've got a bit more info to chew on.

Looks like any other TAB 123 MMO to me.
Am I missing something?

I believe that the targeting is entirely manual rather than tab-style auto target lock of WoW, GW, EQ, LotR, RoM, Allods, and 99% of every other MMORPG. In other words the player can completely miss even hitting their foe, in a similar way to Vindictus or several other action RPSs.
Its not meant to be particularly revolutionary, just to provide a bit of twitch sryle action to fans of that style of play.

You're so wrong it hurts.

And before you ask what it actually changes, think about how many games let you macro-target the squishies...

@Mad Dog I think it actually looks good, at least as far as the animation and design go. I have played quite a few MMOs, especially in the last 5 years, and this looks like one I would want to keep going with.

Graphics look good and combat seems very fluid. I just hope the content will be as intresting as the combat as well.

This game still exists? I've been dying to hear anything about it, but it seems like there are years in between significant news for this game.

Running around a throwing fireballs looks like fun. Could someone please tell me the differences between this MMO and TERA? They look like they're trying to do the same thing, only Blade & Soul seems to get no US media at all.

@InkSix The difference between this and TERA are immense. For starters, TERA has a crosshair. If you're not aiming at something, you won't hit it. There is no lockon, unless the skill you're using is specialized (there's a healing spell that kinda locks on and one Archer multi-target skill that locks).
Blade and Soul has auto-lockon, which means you simply select who you want to hit and then spam attacks while running around trying to avoid attacks. It's less difficult, uses the same exact graphics engine (Unreal Engine 3), and while TERA is fantasy-themed, B&S is martial arts themed.

Getting pretty tired of people spreading misinformation...
The game does have auto-targeting that targets whatever's closest in front of your camera (preventing you from tabbing through enemies to pick off the weaklings like in so many MMOs). Just like TERA, however, the game has actual hit detection and you CAN whiff your attacks just as easily - the game only automatically *targets*, it does NOT change your facing for you.
The primary difference is simply the lack of a crosshair. Blade & Soul, with the various different states (domination, grappling, chi leech, etc.), the ability to whiff, the incredibly high mobility that Qing Gong provides, plays a lot more like an MMO fighting game than anything else. It has all the ingredients except for the button combinations to produce special moves - instead, it's all laid out for you simply, allowing you to focus more on what your opponent is doing and how to counter them than trying to execute this or that special move.
The UI, on the other hand, looks very familiar to anyone who's played an MMO before, so it's easy to see how these misconceptions get around. Make no mistake, however - the game plays VERY differently from any MMO you may have played in the past.

Here, a perfect example. You can easily see several instances of whiffing in this video (even though she's fighting a crowd! Kind of embarrassing..).

@Zyrusticae. Surely you still need a method of selecting "another" target rather than just locking on to the nearest mob and only the nearest mob, and the tab button is usually used, therefore it is tab targetting. To only be able to target one mob in front of you would result in a very bad game!

Awesome. Very Awesome.
The action is very heavily dependent on attack chains, skill combos, reactive timing, and countering.
Can't wait to see more.

Very interested in this, more so then Tera. I have instant request that came to mind when I saw this, I want cross classing, to allow your character to change between all class styles. My mind quickly saw a blademaster using a force ice freeze, then striking the target.

ACtually no.
Its still click-to-target. Its not a non-targeting game, it uses the so called "lock-on targeting".
So overall yes, its a click-to-play with glorified combat animations.

This game's combat functions significantly more like GW2's combat than TERA's.

@Fnights Except that in TERA, if your weapon doesnt collide with the target or your aim is off for a ranged spell, you miss. Having a crosshair and not having one is a very big difference. It's the difference between Monster Hunter and Assassin's Creed combat. B&S's combat locks on to your target so everything follows them, functioning similar to how GW2's combat works. The action animations are just a little different.
