@godly967 You do corpse runs, although I never had an issue since I was new half of the time. Players under level 5 do not have to get stuff from them. After that, I didn't die yet.

@godly967,

To fix the "cannot allocate virtual memory" error you need to install your graphic card drivers. The game requires OpenGL 3D drivers, which do not come natively with Windows. Either install the graphic drivers from the disc that came with your computer or go to the manufacturer's website to download them. Feel free to email support@prairiegames.com if you need further assistance.

I played MoM for a while about five years ago shortly after I abandoned WoW. It was probably the first Western mmo to use a "fremium" model in that you could play for free up to level 20 at the time. I remember the game being a refreshing change from WoW and I remember there being a very helpful community. I am delighted to hear it is still going strong.

@(Unverified) Well, not sure it's going strong, really. From what I could tell the developers haven't chatted with the community in forever. Of course, I could be wrong about that, but almost everyone I talked to said that they play it but don't expect much from them. That sucks to hear, for sure -- it it's true.

@Tempes Magus

I think thats exactly what he was refering to: that weird demographic blob of north america, Europe, and Austrailla+new zeland ... and sometimes Russia too.

... I guess south america as well (even though we don't see much game develpoment from them) seeing as how much the native culture down there has been over run by the western culture.

I personally can't think of any older games the did their trial off of level cap instaid of time frame, so this could verry well be the start of that trend.

As always, loved the post!
I think I tried this game a million years ago, had the same experience as you with the frustrations. I think when I tried it, you could play the single player version unlimited, but online was somehow limited like a traditional "X" many days trial, I think I was too frustrated to ever subscribe. (long time ago, can't really remember details at all) I likewise luv the old-school games. Original EQ was my first game that I got really addicted too back in the sweet Kunark days. Love skill based, likewise wish that a game like this would find a happy home with a company that would give it some love.

While exploring their website found a cute free papertoy!
http://www.minionsofmirth.com/free.html

I suspect the developers are focused on their development/sale of the game engine.

The multi-classing system looks interesting, worth giving the game a look, now does Massively have a guild in this game to join?! :)

@Saker No guild, especially since I have to skip around games so much. We do have a few guilds in different games, though. The main one I am involved in is in Wurm Online.

But I will be streaming much more, and hopefully repeating the same games on the same days so watch the Livestream guide for that. Feel free to join us in game.

Great reading, as allways!

After this post, I downloaded MoM and I am about to install it now!

I am a fan of you just because you play differently mmorpg beyond the usual, which I love!

Keep the good work up! :)

@Tempes Magus I forget -- is the mobile Tibia version the same as the "normal" version? Do they play on the same worlds?

If yes, I can look at it much easier.

I actually downloaded it to try it out this week too. I actually made a couple attempts to meet up with you, but I follow twitter only in the loosest sense, so the usual pattern would be me making a quick check, seeing you saying you were getting only about 1-2 hours ago, but had already logged off.

As for my experience with the game, I enjoyed it. I played a monk, and there is really just something about taking down a grizzly bear with your bare hands that is hard to describe. I actually made a couple of them because, as with many older games, they learning curve ate my first attempt. Turns out there was an advancement skill that was absolutely vital for a monk I wasn't aware of until I spent some time poring over the in-game encyclopedia. Took it on my second, and my DPS jumped by at least 2 times.

Over all, I would say the game is something of a hidden gem and a disappointment at the same time. The game play and the world are great, but the wasted potential is almost every where you look, and it does get to you on occasion. Still, whats there is very playable and one of the games of particular style I have personally played. I fully intend to purchase the full-game upgrade when I am in a financial situation that would allow for $30 to be spent on anything other than food. Alas, I will be putting my 15 Monk/5 Warrior on ice till that day comes, since thats as high as I can go as a freeter.

I remember playing this game a looooong time ago while I was playing WoW during it's early years. Mostly because I remember playing EQ and missed that since I let my sub go out on that. Nice to see that it got some air time here!

Nice to see Minions of Mirth getting some exposure. I've had several runs at it and always enjoyed it. It's still on my hard drive (although possibly not on this PC...hmmm) but there are so many MMOs worth a few hours here and there now, I wonder if I'll ever get the time to revisit MoM.

It used to have a very unusual dual structure, where you could play the entire game either as a solo game, just you in the world - no other players at all - or as an MMO with everyone else. It was the same world, same content, and I seem to remember you could move between the solo and the MMO version. Does it still have that?

Even if the developers aren't developing it any more, it's great that they keep the server up. I wish that was true of my old favorite, "Rubies of Eventide", which sadly went dark two years ago and seems gone for good.

@Bhagpuss It has the dual-client thing but not sure how often you can switch and stuff. I played it only in multiplayer.

I played rubies a bit a LONG time ago, so I checked back on it recently and if I remember correctly, it was dead still. That sucks, because I remember thinking it was pretty cool.

Hi Beau,

Love reading your reviews.

I was wondering if you have had a chance to do a Rise and Shiny for Allods Online. I started playing it this week and it seems like the sort of game you might enjoy doing a review on.

Just a suggestion.

@(Unverified) I don't think I ever have for Rise and Shiny. I've played it and liked it, but the leveling was pretty harsh. This latest string of patches seems pretty cool, though, so you might have just given me an idea. :)

@Beau Hindman

Minions of Mirth came out in 2006.
If you needed help, I told you in the forums I was always there for you :) If you ever planned on playing again, I can personally help you get started, it's no trouble at all. Great review, I enjoyed the video :D
