I like the idea of stealth, but I don't care for the trend that stealth classes MUST be built around the concept of super-fast killing of opponents.

This. I love the mechanic itself, but I much prefer it as utility and not as a mandatory combat opener.

Agreed. I don't understand the current trend of making stealth last 10-30 seconds, solely for the purpose of moving into position for an alpha strikes.

What happened to the days when scouts could lie in wait for as long as they deemed necessary, observing the actions of their enemies? What about the single-player RPG mechanics of sneaking through guards to snatch away valuable items without ever being seen?

I feel stealth has gone wildly off-track in recent years. It started as a game for those who practice patience, planning, and trickery over direct confrontation. It's been bastardized into some kind of meth-addled assassination game for impatient burst-DPS types.

This.

I like stealth as an option, but the way some games implement stealth really limits your choices for use in-game.

Agreed. The stigma of "stealth" needs to go away as badly as healing does. There are far more more interesting concepts that stealth could be used for, sadly i am not paid to list them.

Love it. I don't pvp, so that isn't a factor for me, but I just love being sneaky and having the fights go according to my terms. I so enjoy going around enemies that walk right past me, and if I can lighten their pockets too, well, that's a bonus.

I don't PvP. In PvE is one of the best abilities a class can have.

This. You can skip so many mobs and quest so much faster.

Stealth isn't bad by itself, whats bad about it is getting stunned or disabled by someone in stealth, and than being unable to act and just watch your character getting killed in seconds.

I don't usually play stealth classes, its just not my thing. However ive been playing with the Recon in Global Agenda since it went free, and find it quite enjoyable to disappear and take a good look at an otherwise frantic battle from a safe distance, and pick my target. But in GA there are no stuns and instant deaths (not counting turrets, god i hate them), so stealth isn't a win button.

@Dumac I agree on this so much.
Getting slaughtered by someone who just appeared so very, very annoying, but the Recon class in Global Agenda is so much fun. I can stealth around, see what\s going on, find a good vantage point, snipe away, stealth away with no one the wiser.

Yes, I hate the stun lock nothing you can do death. It is extremely frustrating. I've rolled some rogues and had some fun 1- or 2-shotting players, but I always felt it was cheap and that I was somehow cheating. I never leveled a rogue (in WoW) past 20-ish. It is easy in pvp.

But to me, the worst of all is the Pally - the bubble hearth, bubble full heal, and all the stuns and interrupts. I played a pally to the mid 40s and it was seriously the easiest class I've ever played in pvp or tanking pve. Easy.

Hunters...everybody knows about hunters...

Healing and Stealth rogues are the only way I will get in a PvP. I am older than the average player base (39) and usually only bind 3 or 4 buttons around my WASD, can't handle more than that. Stealth is my evening power against younger twitchier player.

BUT, with that said, god I hate it when I get stun locked with y healers ;-)

Stealth for closing range and using openers is usually fine.

The ability to go back into permanent stealth whilst in combat and therefore reset any fight has always caused trouble for balancing PvP.

I wish that stealth were more viable in PvE. It often seems like it does too little, or you are getting ambushes for which it does not work. The classes that use stealth often rely on massive burst damage from abilities on long cooldowns, but aren't made for sustained fighting, so grinding mobs in constant fighting will end badly for them.

If devs are even going to allow stealth in PvE, they need to make its use require some thought. But they also need some mechanism to level out the discrepancy in rewards between the stealther and the grinder who kills every mob.

I just wish that stealth in MMOs was a little more challenging and realistic - the idea that I can stand 10 feet away from someone on a concrete floor and not be seen seems a little ridiculous. I would love to see an MMO employ stealth a la Metal gear.

The main problem with most games and stealth is that they generally tie it to the glass cannon burst damage classes. That's fine in PvE, but really sucks in PvP.

Stealth is at its most palatable when it's just a travel and first-strike (but for normal, non-OMGWTF?! damage attacks) ability...

Love it when I'm using it, hate it when someone uses it on me.

A lot of powerful skills are like that though :)
