Hey, great article Eliot. I've actually never played FFXI or FFXIV (though I purchased XI a few months ago, and have yet to try it out), but class flavor is something that I really do value in a game. It seems that FF has this in spades.

I'm waiting for FFXIV to kick up its heels a little bit, and then I have a feeling I'll be on board.

Cheers

That's great! XI has long been my favorite MMO, and I've tried quite a few. Don't let the barriers for new players get you down, though. The game really shines in the later levels.

yeah, guilds really need to flex their muscles a lot earlier than 20, it's kind of understandable that these guilds would't give players the time of day until they have stopped being wannabes and gained a minute level of proficiency.

but 20 in way too late in the game, 10 would be so much better.

@Fakeassname I'm thinking 15 might be optimal, since that's just when the slump starts to hit -- you still level pretty quickly, but 15-20 take about as much time as 1-15. Perhaps if there was just a little preamble quest, something to make it clear that guild membership was right around the corner...

This was always one of the things I really liked about XI. Without the lore present, it would have been easy to feel like classes were sort of a "gotta catch 'em all" thing. Quite a few of the job-specific artifact armor quests are some of the most memorable storylines in the game. There are a few that don't quite hit the mark, but for the most part they do a very good job of making it feel like your class has a real place in the game world and is an integral part of who your character is.

Eliot (or any other FFXIV RPers), if you don't mind me asking, do you see a lot of RP in FFXIV? I'm considering trying to find a copy of the game, but I remember there being little to no RP in FFXI for some reason and I'm a little wary. I've heard that Besaid is the place to go.

@Irem Speaking for myself, I run across RP pretty much every single time I'm in game. This might be unique to Ul'dah, but I tend to doubt it. The RP Coalition (http://www.ffxiv-roleplayers.com) is still very active and central to the community, and there are a lot of RP shells and players on Besaid. (Also some that have closed, but that's pretty normal.)

I can't say the environment will stay good forever, but for now, it's pretty strong.

Red Mage AF quests still make me kind of sad, and occasionally creeped out when I remember them.

FFXI just had amazing quests period.

I really wanna get into this game but it seems like after the first quest line, I was just kinda dumped in the city and I have very little information about what to do. I've been doing guildleves and have gotten to Rank 10 in one class and Rank 7 in another and gotten my physical level up to 11 or so. I know there has to be more to it than just guildleves right?

Also, I just found out earlier today that all of my gear upgrades are only available by crafting or buying from player shops. It seems like that is the kind of thing that should be written down somewhere or did I just miss it?

Anyway, if anyone has any advice for a struggling newbie I'd really appreciate it!
