I enjoy both of these games in their own way, but the communitis are horrible, and probably why both games dosen't have 20 X more players.

@Dunraven a game that is based around competitive play is a game where the players play to win, not to get emotionally attached to their characters.

How many delicate flowers have you met in Counterstrike?

that's the difference between a mmorpg and a competitive multiplayer game. LoL is played to win. Not to make friends and group and farm xp together. But to crush the oposition. Boot-on-back-of-human-head. When you lose it will be a horrible defeat and when you win it's a thriving victory.

I'm not sure how to explain it, it's pretty obvious. Sure you can deny my argument, call me names, tell me how horrible i am as a human being. I fully expect it. But it won't change the fact. The community is appropriate for the game type. It's agressive, competitive, elitist. Perfect.

Plus both games have already massive communities and are on xfire top ten daily so they certainly don't lack players.

Completely agree. being competitive doesn't mean being ignorant.

@Dunraven I believe you just illustrated the prime reason what is wrong with the games communities.
I can deal with the poor sportsmanship, but any time anybody attempts to discuss, and I'm quite serious about this next point, ANYTHING AT ALL... the game's communities will relentlessly ridicule and harass the person doing the talking. Instead of... you know, coming up with a logical response to it.

To be completely honest Paterah, I'll agree with the aggressive and elitist parts of your statement. Them being competitive and... "Perfect", I'd have to say that by and far that isn't the case. Some of the players you run into go so far out of their way to convince you and everybody else that because they beat in one game that they are the ubermensch.
Its like playing with xbox kids every game.

Plus the league of legends forums are completely maligned to productive discussion of any sort.

@Ozewa

I can attest that the community of LoL is absolutely abysmal. When I hit Level 10, I stopped leveling and getting gold from bots after 6 rounds. This infuriated me. I loved the casual, fun atmosphere of just learning to play champions.

Well, I went on the forums to discuss this. IMMEDIATELY I was laid into, with people telling me to leave, quit, I'm just a troll, I have no place in this game, even though I was having fun with the bots.

I actually did quit the game. I was hoping they'd send me a hero and skin for free, like they did with that spartan, but the neckbeards that inhabit it started crying that people who had quit for a month had gotten Pantheon and a skin for free. Thus they stopped the promotion, and for the past 2 months, I've had no interest to play.

So the crying fatties got a prospective customer to leave, AND made the quitters actually not want to come back. Personally, I think that frelling community is made up of a bunch of basement dwelling babies. DO NOT play LoL under any circumstances, it's populated by armchair generals that want newbies they can easily crush so they can feel good about living in their parent's basement.

Petarah isn't that off the mark. You guys are partially right, if someone is a bad player there is never any reason to start using racist/sexist/homophobic remarks against them. But these are team games, if one person is bad they can bring down the whole rest of the team, and if you're doing that in a ranked game I see no reason you shouldn't be called out on it. I mean real life competitive sports are like this, why can't we do it in competitive videogames? As long as it's kept mostly civil, I have no problem with people being informed they are bringing down the team.

The way I see it, the problem with League of Legends (and DOTA and any other DOTA-like games) is that yes, it's competitive, and competitive online games aren't really known for their squeaky-clean, mature communities. But those usual problems are exacerbated by the fact that, by its very nature, the game mechanics themselves are completely hostile to newbies. Big example: If you have a new player in a game that keeps running in and getting killed (thus granting the enemy more and more gold every time he's killed), you are much worse off than if that player's slot was simply empty. So most of the relatively decent players are driven away right out of the gate by people who don't have the patience to explain to the newbie politely that, yes, running into the enemy and getting killed DOES have negative consequences besides having to wait a while to respawn.

That's not even getting into what happens if someone doesn't seem to be using their character in a way most people recognize as useful.

I should clarify that when I say "relatively decent players" I'm referring to civility, not skill. (

@paterah

That's just a BS justification for emotional immaturity and an utter lack of sportsmanship. I was a collegiate athlete and am about as competitive as it gets, but even if the goal was to "destroy" the competition, I always respected my opponents and, more importantly, my teammates. I have a thick skin, so I play both HoN and Bloodline Champions regardless of the community, but I don't delude myself into believing that bad behavior is synonymous with competition.

What you say about the LOL community is true. The players are infuriatingly unpleasant people much of the time. Then again, you also run into a lot of people who are fun and fine.

Like with many things, you just need a thick skin and an appreciation of the game's competitive qualities to enjoy LOL. I still hate it some of the time. (Just had two really horrible, frustrating games, where my side didn't stand a chance due to my teammates picking "fun" champions instead of building a good team together with synergy that we could have a competitive fight with.) But I also really enjoy the fights where your choices and skill use turn the tables in a close match. They make up for the baddies.

Rise of the Immortals is possibly the most disappointing moba I've ever played. The hero designs are really poor and some are just strange.

to be completely fair, Rise of Immortals is in such an early beta stage that it may as well be considered alpha. I'm not really expecting too much from the developers, but the game is still going through a lot of iterative testing. It does have some potential though.

last year I asked if they would be covering MOBAs here at massively, and they told me that they had made the editorial decision to not do that.
That made me a sad panda, and I'm glad to see they changed their minds.

Its awsome to see massively write about these games now that they are growing like wildfire.

But there are so many more than just LoL and HoW, think of BattleForge, Savage 2 and like #Ably said games like Starcraft or DoW.

I might be complaining to early but it would be awsome of you could write about a large variatie of games.

Better game in my opinion. I see that you cannot dispute my statements, so you go on complaining about the numbers of its player base. /applaud.
