Ever wondered about the design process behind a fantasy MMO raid instance? If so, you'll want to check out a new RIFT dev blog from senior game designer Berenger Fish. We profiled Alsbeth the Discordant a few weeks ago, and today Fish takes us through the iterative process that led to the sorceress' unveiling at the culmination of the River of Souls raid event.
Trion's first RIFT raid, Greenscale's Blight, was expanded to include more bosses than originally planned, and the full plate left Alsbeth homeless prior to the decision to give the character her own raid. "The final result is something that we're very proud of," Fish explains. "Not because 'we did the best we could given the circumstances' but because the River of Souls stands on its own as being a kick-ass raid."
Head to ZAM for the full dev blog.

@Dunraven The music is great... The voice acting is terrible though.

"Warriors and Rogues buffed, PvP armor improved, promise of future PvP world events among many other things."?????
So are you saying the very classes they nerfed not even one month ago are now being buffed again?
Non warrior/rogue pvpers complain till those two classes are nerfed now warrior/rogue pvpers complain enough for them to be buffed. Doesn't sound like a good design philosophy to me.

QQing and not bringing a solution to the table?
Doesn't sound like a good critical philosophy to me.
Rogues and warriors dominated early on, especially in PVP, because of the huge damage bonus they received from skills and overall mobility they could get. Remember this was very early on and from the data they add, it showed that melee (Warrior/Rogues) were pwning faces. They nerfed them into place. Cleric>Shamans which are still ridiculously powerful in melee weren't nerfed because they are very underplayed compared to rogue and warriors and that's why they got nerfed.
It's hard to balance something when the data you draw your information from is biased from the start by player skill, affinity and population. Certain type of people are attracted to certain classes. I am gonna make a very wide generalization here, but people who wants it easy or are seriously skill-less tend to drift towards Mages. Those who are more selfish tend to drift towards rogue (seriously, how many rogues have you seen trying to complete WF objectives?). Warriors tends to be the overzealous, aggressive ones and I am not gonna complain about clerics because only smart people play clerics (generalization, remember?). This affects the kind of QQ you'll receive from players. Warriors will always QQ about mobility and survival in PVP. Mages will always QQ that other classes hit too hard or that they don't hit hard enough(See: Warrior/Rogue nerfs). Rogues will QQ about everything because to them, the game is all about 1v1 ganking and they should be able to do that everywhere against any numbers. Clerics never QQ 'cause fuck, we're clerics, we can tank, heal and DPS like pros without being overpowered (except for shaman/justiciar, too much survivability, but that's just me).
So far, the buffs and nerfs weren't just from what people complained, but from the flavor of the week ('cause trion too fast for fotm) combination that popped up in large quantity. When I go PVP in the level 30-40 brackets, all mages are a form of pyro because it got an edge over all the other souls.
There is no perfect balancing system, there will never be because of the human error, their design philosophy is much better than any other mmo company and the balance right from the start is pretty damn good compared to other games like WoW,GW,WAR(which still isn't fixed btw) etc...

No offense Icemasta but it is not a players job to come up with idea's on how to fix a game. That is Trions job and one they have been screweing it up since beta by listening to the PvP kiddies.
I think Scott carried over the $oE nerf tradition to Trion and I dont think it will ever stop. The game is PvP>Raid>PvE and its nerfs have and will happen most in that order.
The puny server sizes causing Q's and the PvP/Raid nerf fest was the killer for me. Oh and yes the voice acting was soo bad I thought it was done as a joke.
It is the new most advertised product on the shelf and people buy it but hype can not hide its quality when you open the box.
