This is interesting...I wonder if the rumors are true that Trion just aren't hitting their numbers. If the truly want to be competitive they should have looked at a Guild Wars Business model.

@Dunraven I think there are 2 things going on with the event and "trial":

1) Slated for right when people's 30 days are up from buying the box. Both the event and the trial are targeted to minimize this loss that every game sees.

2) They really want new people to see the event, so last weekend they got all these people to try the game then didn't deliver the event. I think they want to make sure these people get another shot at seeing the event.

From another interview from the producer it sounds like they exceeded their expectations in both initial subscribers and the amount of new people that are coming into the game daily. He did say they would be releasing numbers once the quarter is up and they can do some analysis, so we will see.

Every time I've been in game I've seen tons of players and very active chat channels. That goes for pretty much any time of day, with peak hours of course being evenings. Of course I can't speak for servers other than mine but if they're anything like the one I play on there's no reason to think Rift's numbers are suffering.

Numbers can always be better, no matter how good they might be. Don't you think Blizzard would love to have 20 million players rather than the "mere" 12 million they've got now? :)

A one-time-only event with unique rewards is a great hook to get people to check out the game. They've put a lot of time and effort into it, so it shouldn't be surprising that they're promoting it as much as they can.

I think it's a smart business move, rather than a bandage for a problem. Many MMOs go live and then just sort of...sit. Trion has been aggressively marketing RIFT in comparison.

They never mentioned any numbers they had to hit. And I would like you to point me torwards the place where those rumors are being spread or else I just have to assume that you are starting them yourself.

The game has been bleeding players since launch and its now gotten to the point where they have to offer the trials to prop up the numbers on the weekends when the majority of players play.

http://www.riftstatus.net/shards/na

Outside of that time the population as a whole barely hovers over Trions "medium" mark with 3/4's of the few zones there are sitting empty.

New players coming in will find no one to group with outside of the "trial" weekends as the game severely punishes any desire to roll additional alts once you reach the cap of 50 (which can be reached within 3 or 4 days - not a challenge at all) because there's only one starting area per faction (for a total of two in the entire game).

You're then forced along the same quests, the same zones ad nauseum.

The game was marketed from the viewpoint that you had a lot of customization available by mixing both "souls" and the points within those "souls".

However the reality is that Trion has repeatedly nerfed these so that there is only one way to spec for each of the four "callings".

Altogether a complete waste of time and money.

If you're looking for the next mmo to play - keep waiting because Rift isn't it.

They have rabid fanboi's though as I'm quite sure you can see from reading the various posts.

@meanieme The game definitely has been losing momentum to say the least. At first you had nearly all servers hitting Full. Then you had half the servers sitting at Full. Now you have most servers sitting at Medium and only some hit Full during primetime.

I did a search to see how many people were playing at night at 1am server, I found 115 people online and 53 were level 50's. Couldn't get a group formed and the server was on Medium.

I'd be all for server merging at this point if I still even bothered to log into the game. My game is active until May, but I doubt I'll even log on to see this broken event.

"Epic World Invasion is coming, call to arms!!!" ......"false alarm folks, the evil invaders are having technical difficulties"

@meanieme You got to 50 in 3 days? You must have done absolutley nothing else in life along with that and probably didn't pay attention to anything in game. A no life marathon session is hardly a bad mark against the game.

Also I must be reading this chart you posted wrong, because while I do see a decline, as would be expected for a new game (let's not pretend everyone was supposed to be one retained in this ADHD age), I don't see this mass exodus you are talking about. It seems pretty damn level.

And maybe the trial weekend is set on the weekend because that's when most ppl have time to play games. Really the conspiracies with you ppl.

For a "dying" game you sure spend a lot of time on it. I highly doubt you've played much of the game at all, let alone hit 50. Most of the points you make are contrary to actual in-game experience. Keep hating though.

@dudemanjac He means 3 days /played.......

The game is so mundane the further along you progress. You'll find this out after you make it past level 20, keke.

There might not be a mass exodus but there isn't exactly a rolling influx of players either. The lack of any new servers opening would tell you this.

6 months from now people will go Rift who. We'll be playing GW2 and TOR.

If you haven't tried this game yet this weekend would be an excellent opportunity to do so. Smooth game play and when there are issues they aren't let loose on the live server. If this is your first visit this weekend..don't let the starting area dissuade you...the 1st 7-8 levels are pretty much a tutorial and the game in earnest begins after you do this area.

Well I snagged the code and applied to my trial account. I played some last weekend after a friend invited me and I liked it, but now this weekend is pretty busy. Not sure I'll be able to play but i will try.

Overall it is a nice game, but I need a change of pace from fantasy, and just last weekend I discovered Star Trek Online and now I'm hooked!

@vinnypop problem is you can as they say, play the entire game for free with that. Rift doesn't have legs unless you are a casual.

Trion's marketing department is really good.

It's a fun little game, I hope they do well with it. Them Defiants.
