The nations of Final Fantasy XIV are scattered, and odds are high that if the Garlean Empire invades once again there will be no chance of resistance. But large-scale threats are nothing new to Eorzea, and the tradition that has defended the continent before is being revived once more, in the form of the Grand Companies. Hinted at several times by producer Naoki Yoshida, today's patch is the start of the new content associated with these overarching gatherings, with the corresponding lore page explaining what these companies are and what threats they face both within and without.
Each of the three companies -- the Order of the Twin Adder, the Maelstrom, and the Immortal Flames -- is detailed on the official page, with information about the past and present of each organization. They also lie at the heart of some of the new sidequests released with this update. Patch 1.17 also contains new notorious monsters, new equipment that requires rather than favors specific disciplines, and changes to party size and Behest. Final Fantasy XIV players are encouraged to read the full patch notes as well as the Grand Company page -- it looks as if the game's storyline content is starting to move forward after the past several system tweaks.

Hmm... I always thought they had this idea for FFXIV called "adventure companies" or something similar, and that they were kind of like player-based guilds with more features than just a plain linkshell.
Are adventure companies/guilds something that they're still expecting to implement?
Or were they just talking about these "grand company" factions the whole time and I somehow got the wrong idea??

@Naru now in 3D They're supposed to be two separate features. What the timetable on player companies is we don't currently know, but it has been included in Yoshida's various updates on overall development progress.

@Irem Admittedly, she looks cool, and I love female characters and players in MMOs... and I know that female Roegadyn were always canon... but...
If they became as common as male Roegadyn it would completely ruin my awesome image of Roegadyn as a race of butch, muscular gay guys!! :(

No where's the male Miqote at? FFXI had at least one male Mithra, now FFXIV needs some male Miqotes. :)

Dude, just head down to the nearest harbor and I'm sure that image will be restored in the nick of time.
@RogueJedi86
Someone got a reply from one of the devs recently I think that said they'd be looking into male Miqo'te, female Roegadyn, and female Highlanders. :D

A lot of very nice additions and adjustments. This steady pace of communication and patching speaks volumes for their dedication to making this game great in time for PS3's launch (Whenever that may be).

I was confused (not hard to do :P ) so thanks for answering the first questions there Eliot.
While the game has been a disappointment it does look like they are trying to get us back in their good graces. I am glad too, but I wont be happy until they give me a damn chocobo and let not forget airships. Screw this whole anima and teleportation thing, while nice I will give it up for my low rider chocobo.
