Could Mass Effect be an MMO? In a recent interview with Game Informer, Executive Producer Casey Hudson of BioWare says that the intellectual property makes sense for an MMO. We know that many Massively readers would absolutely pick up a multiplayer version of the series. Do the producers of the game think it is possible to transport the Mass Effect universe to the MMO space? Hudson told Game Informer, "We've been trying to think of a way that makes sense for people to experience Mass Effect with their friends. We haven't yet come up with a way to do that, so we don't have anything to announce at this time. But, obviously, multiplayer is something we want to do more of in the future as a company."
We have to assume that Commander Shepard saves the galaxy once and for all at the end of Mass Effect 3, which comes out later this year. Is that world going to be interesting enough to continue? Hudson thinks so: "I think Mass Effect has that quality to it. If you get rid of the Reapers and win that, wouldn't it be amazing to just live on the Citadel or just take a ship to Omega? That makes sense."
Whatever the case, we will have to wait for Mass Effect 3 to come out before any sort of official announcement, but that doesn't mean we can't hold out hope.

It's called TOR.

@Apakal: this.
The Mass Effect IP was only created so that Bioware could keep making KOTOR games without paying roylaties to Lucasarts. Ditto Dragon Age with D&D/Hasbro. Now that Bioware has EA's money behind them it makes sense to use the better known property for their AAA offering. Other than light sabres and the names of the planets, there isn't a lot of difference between TOR and a theoretical ME MMO. Oh, and lesbians. There aren't any lesbians in Star Wars AFAIK. ;)
Even ignoring all of the above, I really hope ME - and DA for that matter-don't get turned into MMOs. As much as I love a good story-based single player RPG, the stories in MMOs should come from the players. That's why I quit WoW, and why I'm most likely skipping TOR.
At any rate, it'll never happen; ME multiplayer will probably look more like Halo than aything else. The only way Bioware is going to develop a different property into an MMO would be if TOR flops.... and if that happen, there ain't going to be a Bioware (see also: Origin Systems, Mythic Entertainment, etc).

I'd be interested in playing that. I'd be a Drell or a Volus.
Not sure if I'd want it to be a shooter based MMO. Can't think of any other way to do it though.

@koehler83 I would love to play as an Elkor and troll global chat channels in the Citadel: "Sarcastically: Interesting story, human."

If it doesn't play like firefall then I'd want nothing to do with it. ....Well... I mean I'd try it out but THEN I'd want nothing to do with it..... I mean ... well.. if it was good... I probably would stick with it ... till I got bored that is.

Not every game that comes out for consul needs to become an MMO. They should add multiplayer in Mass Effect 3 and scrap any MMO ideas.

Ive heard people say it would make a good MMO, but the only thing i think it has going for it in that regard is multiple races. Technically, every game can be a MMO or have a multiplayer part, but i don't think that should happen just because it can.

It's more than that, and Hudson nails it when he talks about it in the GameInformer interview: it's a world that people want to save when they play through it because it would be a great place to live in. Impromptu roleplay pops up all over the place around this series, even among people who don't usually RP, which I think is amazing. Take away Shepard and the Reapers and what you have is still a compelling setting with a lot of stories to tell.

I think this is a IP that lends itself best to creating a quality MMO.
It has a solid variety of species, a vast universe where to build lore upon and could have a innovative combat system for MMOs if they used the game's system.
I would play this the moment it releases.

So now we know what'll happen.....Mass Effect 3 will end in a cliffhanger which will be the jumping off point for the inevitable MMO.

Ugh. That already killed one series for me. I hope it doesn't happen to another.

Please not an MMO.
How about a Diablo style multilayer game. Where maybe four of your buddies are specters and you go round busting heads.
I love mmorpgs but I think it would loose the richness of the universe if Mass Effect were mmo, imho.

Personally I'm quite happy with the Mass Effect universe being single player only. I'm kind of protective of single player games these days, since they seem to be so rapidly disappearing.
In the end, I don't really like when existing IPs are turned into MMOs. They never fit perfectly with the genre conventions and gameplay mechanics. I think if you're creating an MMO you should create the IP from the ground up to fit the game you're creating.

Any space-based game isnt really going to be as good as people think due to the nature of space. Space is (arguably) infinite so unless the makers code and program thousands of different worlds each with different content, people are going to feel it is too small or on rails. STO tried it and that feels like the smallest game in the world, Eve does it well and the universe feels massive but isnt anywhere near the same as ME.
Sometimes the idea is better than the reality and ust because you can do something, doesnt mean you should. Unfortunately money talks though!

Yet another sci-fi shooter MMO? I can't say I'm interested.
SWTOR is one of the very few sci-fi MMOs to use a non-shooter format (thank you, thank you, Bioware).
So, an ME MMO? No thanks. Now, if Bioware was to build a fantasy MMO based on Dragon Age or Jade Empire or Baldur's Gate, yeah, I'd definitely be interested. :)

but wouldn't a Dragon Age MMO just be yet another fantasy dungeon MMO? Its kinda hard to criticize one genre and not the other consider both Sci-Fi and Fantasy make up like 98% of the MMO market.
