It's not about the money, it's about a good game. That's what it comes down to.

I used to sell UO items/gold/property way back when UO was pretty much only game out, was made easy because of Ebay and ya never got in trouble for it.
Payed for my first computer that way.
Then Ebay stoped the sales of online items/gold etc in round about the time Eve was the next big thing for easy cash for me. Once ebay stoped listings, i pretty much gave up making easy money, games was starting to ban accounts if caught, not many places to sell unless you made ya own website etc. I never saw anything wrong with selling or buying, was pretty much a time saver, Most my customers bought stuff for simple reason of it saved them doing it and et them get on with having fun and not farming for items/gold.

There is a reason most games have rules. When you play an MMO, you're asked to abide by the rules the game developers set down, which generally includes obtaining things by way of action in the game world rather than picking up your wallet because you can't be bothered. It's cheating. I wouldn't have an issue with it (after all, it's your experience you're spoiling by being impatient), if it weren't for two things:

1) It encourages gold sellers to take actions that impact gameplay. They don't care whether or not they're getting in the way of legitimate players. In fact, if they can monopolize an area or a market, it's good for them--they make more money and people are encouraged to buy more currency from them. For some of them, their entire day is spent doing their best to screw people out of their accounts.

2) There is a point in that the grind to get currency in game can be the opposite of fun for many people and often unnecessarily punishing. FFXI is a good example of a game in which it used to be so difficult to make money that people who didn't want to buy gil felt forced to do it, and I eventually quit the game because their ideas to take down RMT all involved making it even HARDER for players to make money solo. Unfortunately, rather than seeing the success of RMT as a cue to make in-game currency less of a pain in the neck, the industry has instead taken from this that they can charge players for almost anything extra they want, and people will buy it because they would rather take out their credit card than spend time. This is threatening to people whose enjoyment of MMOs is at least partially based on their nature as self-contained virtual worlds.

In short, your right to swing your fist ends at my face.

My experience was pretty much when there was no rules enforced years ago and wasn't frowned upon.
I wouldn't waist my time now days when chances are you can end up loosing the lot. People have grown to hate gold sellers, (WOW did that in my opinion with all the spaming, mind you people selling jedi in SWG didn't help too).
I'm a lot older now and don't have the stamina or luxury to stay up all night now I'm a father of two :)
Its now all cloak and dagger stuff, mixed in with deceit.
At least i did it when it was in the open. :)
Note: Been over 10 years since i did this so don't brand me with todays gold farmers :P we are totally different in my eyes, we stayed at our keyboards and was still part of communities, not like todays bots.

It may not have been widely reviled when you did it, but the success of individuals doing it certainly led to the widespread abuse of the practice by huge corporations. Not that I lay the blame at your feet, because it was inevitable anyway that some asshole would figure out how human nature works and make a mint.

Did the demand for gold/items come before the supply? :)
