Eliot!

I don't know a good way of contacting you so I hope this works. I've been working on recreating zones of Final Fantasy XI in Minecraft. So far I've completed Port San d'oria and it looks pretty good. Anyways, I thought you might be interesting if you have a Minecraft account. Reply to this and I can give you my email or something.

I hope to hear back from you.

I never, ever thought I would say this, because I started playing XI on PS2 and I know a few people who still have PS2 as their only option for playing, but I think the absolute best thing they could do for XI at this point would be to start releasing new content that doesn't support the PS2. I truly feel awful saying that, because I remember what it was like to only have the PS2 to play on and to hear people saying they should drop support for it because they wanted better graphics, but the types of consoles necessary to play the game can't even be reliably found for sale used any more.

I'm just getting back into the game after a few years' absence, so I'm curious to see what they do with it. The fact that they're even putting out stuff like test servers, forums, and longterm plans is heartening, because when the game was in its prime, none of that stuff would have ever come remotely close to being on the table. God knows it was like pulling teeth to get to this point (my mind is still blown), so it's hard to imagine them finally going to all the trouble for a game they don't intend to provide robust support to in the future. I imagine that the less-than-wild success of XIV might have also forced them to consider the potential revitalization of XI in ways they otherwise wouldn't have; I remember either Tanaka or Sundi saying in an interview that they eventually expected people to make the switch from XI to XIV, which probably isn't going to be happening on a large scale any time in the near future.

And I really don't think it's mean to lay blame at Tanaka's feet, even though he's stepped down. It belongs there, along with the praise for being at least partially responsible for making the game what it is. A lot of those crazy hoop-jumping, backbreaking game design choices make for incredible immersion, because the world doesn't feel like it was designed for the player characters. It feels like it was designed by and for the Zilart, and our characters are constantly having to break their heads against architecture, technology, and magic that is thousands of years out of their range of understanding, has lain untouched for centuries, and at best is broken and requires hopping on one foot while spitting wooden nickels to do anything with, and at worst is actively hostile when poked. That's the fun stuff, the stuff that really needs no explanation or handholding and becomes sort of a cache of secret knowledge among the playerbase. Needing to learn and remember which mobs aggro to which triggers and how the elemental cycle and beast food chain work is fun, too. The problem arises when the game mechanics themselves feel like they were designed with Zilart--and not actual players--in mind; puzzles and maze-like zones and obscure tricks are one thing, but there's a lot of stuff that seems to have been made annoying just to force people to play longer, which is game design that was outdated before it was invented.

I was a die-hard Ps2 player, but I don't think anything is wrong with mothballing support for it. At this point, PS2s and PS3s even capable of running FFXI are hard to impossible to find: the HDD on the PS2 should be starting to fail very soon en masse, and backwards compatible ps3s are 5 years back in the production chain.

I think the greater problem is there is just so much content. Tremendous amount of water under the bridge. I don't come back mostly because of that.

Man, even with all these announcements you can still write an article of whining. Incredible.

@Coldbrand
Residual angst from the fact that FFXI > FFXIV.

Simple solution. Port it to PS3, and maintain a console userbase. At the absolute LEAST develop it based on PS3 limitations. I don't like segmenting the game any further than it needs to be, but if it makes the game work better, or lets them upgrade the PC version, as this point, they should.

Out of curiousity, are they still running the 360 version?
