Ragnarok Online's been pretty quiet following its Renewal update last year, but the free-to-play train is now passing through town and it looks as though the game is hopping aboard for the ride.
Gravity Interactive has announced that it is dropping the subscription model from Ragnarok Online effective immediately. The company encourages new and returning players interested in this F2P format to make their home on the Yggdrasil or Valkyrie servers.
The company is also offering a premium VIP subscription package for players looking to turbo-boost their advancement. VIP players not only have the option to play on a VIP-only server (Ymir) but will also benefit from a 50% increase in experience gain, loot drops, more storage, a lessened death penalty, access to special areas, and the full use of all nine character slots.
If this low, low cost of entry tempts you to check out the game, all it takes to play is a free Warp Portal account through the official website.

50% experience increases? Don't they mean players who continue to pay will see no changes but players who stop paying will see a 50% experience decrease? thus creating a new norm where the experience rate sucks and the game gets extra grindy in transition?

RO is a grindy game in general. It's supposed to be that way. Even if they decrease the experience rate for regular users by 50% I don't see how that's a problem.
If they were to give out all the benefits paid users have right now to the free users nobody would sub anymore. That would be bad for the company and in the long run terrible for the game itself.

First Global Agenda, and now Ragnarok?
Well... Free is good, so I like the direction where this is going... I think.

I think anyone who's wanted to play Ragnarok Online for free has already been doing so for quite some time >.>;
Since there are (or at least when I remember years ago, were) dozens of private servers out there.

Oh yeah, there is an ungodly amount of them.
So much so, that some even went as far as custom-making things to try and differentiate themselves from the other hundreds of Private RO Servers. Best example? Hentai RO, no don't look it up, but I still got a kick out of the idea when I saw it on a list of servers.

Thanks to Beau's ambassadorship, my interest in F2Ps is at an all time high, and that seems to be a very good thing of late.

One of the first MMOs I ever played. Nice to know that, if I feel nostalgic, I can hop in and check :)

@Carolina Me too!
I tried to go back for some nostalgia, but you can never really recapture that first feeling.

Yeah, same here. Time to see how those rose-tinted glasses hold up. At least I can jump in when I feel like it, and if it's not fun anymore, oh well.

Strangely enough I seem to remember seeing RO do this some years ago. With a division between free and paid servers. Who knows maybe I was glimpsing through a crack in time into the future ...... and maybe I should have bothered glimpsing the lottery outcome from said future while I was at it >,< Curse you hindsight

Shouldn't the title be "free to play again"? Played RO for a good while back when it originally launched. They decided to go pay and thats when I stopped playing.
