Already said this in the reply to the first comment, but i really wanna reiterate. Trion is, at the moment, doing horrible bussiness. It seems to me that they either have monkeys working in their marketing department, or they simply just DO NOT want people to subscribe for their game.

First of all, why do they give these "trials" as codes reedemable if you know a subscriber? What if you don't? Do they not want people that don't currently know subscribers to play their game? Anyway, it just makes the whole process harder, for everyone, as codes are being given out freely on the internet on various MMO forums and websites. So i don't see the point of this.

Second, and most importantly, i was really disappinted by their marketing decision. I played the last weekend trial, and to my surprise it got me (kindda) hooked; having just quit WoW i figured it would be nice to try it out. After leveling 2 callings (the max number of chars you can make on a trial) to lvl 15 i decided i'd go ahead and get a 1 month subscription and try it out further. Lo and behold, Trion doesn't want my money! Why? Well, apparently i need to buy the game first, even though it is on currently my harddrive, and i can log in and play my trial account. So i don't see any point, none whatsoever do buy the game. Plus i figured i'd pay 13 euros (1 month) to test it further, with the high chances i'd have played it ever more; but paying 50 up front now, no way. So basically, rather than possibly gaining a new subscriber and making more money, plus making a month's worth right away, they simply don't want any of it unless i "buy" the game (even though i'd get nothing that i don't already have). If they wanted people to still blindly buy the game, they probably shouldn't have made this trial.

In the end, i don't even know if i should call them greedy or just simply stupid; rather, i'd call them both. They're both greedy, and stupid, and not a single f*** will be given when this game gives its last breath.

@Laurs The point of this promotion is for existing subscribers to invite their friends to try the game. People are more likely to buy and continue to subscribe is they know that a friend is already playing. Too subtle for you I guess

Seriously .... your major complaint is that you have to buy something before you can fully experience it. You do realise that the purchase price includes a month's playtime before you need to subscribe right? Shock horror company wants to make money on a product they have spent millions to develop, who would have thought it!

@Laurs My reading comprehension is fine thank you.

What you have is a trial key what you are buying is the full product key that unlocks the full product. Sure they could give you a subscription for the product you have now but it would still have the same limitations that it currently has. i.e. level/character creation limits. which would be pretty pointless and a waste of your money.

What you are basically saying is you want the full product without paying for it in the first place and no the subscription isn't paying for it that is more like an ongoing rental fee to continue to play in their world

@Laurs

Really? You said that? ... With a straight face?

Rift is worth playing ... and paying for the game in addition to the sub. However, you want to bash it for something ... let's start with the T1/T2 game breaking bugs.

AP 2 weeks ago, FC last week and now Fae this week.

@eyeball2452

I brought this up already. People are, for some reason, crying because of expected nerfs and other crap that happens in every single MMO. You have to buy a retail/digital copy of the game to play it on a permanent basis, just like every other P2P game? SHOCK!

Not enough people are actually bringing up the real problems, primarily that Trion needs to go back and fix bugs in Experts and re-tune them so that all T2s are actually harder than all T1s.

Since there are virtually no posts about this on Massively, it makes me wonder how many of the detractors here have really played the game at level 50.

@Laurs I have to say, you are just showing your ignorance is all by talking down to other people on here. We are here to say what we feel and give feedback. Demeaning others by stating anything about there reading comprehension, well.. it just plan shows how little you truly know.

I honestly would prefer people like you not playing with true MMO gamers like some of us out there. I have played every single MMO out there I can find, ever since the first test release of Ultima Online. That being said, 90% of the MMOs that you "pay-2-play" are where you have to buy the game. As long as they have enough subscribers to pay for the game, they have no reason to give you or anyone else a free copy of the game. Yea, you might have the software downloaded and runing, but it's not a fully unlocked game. It's no different they every only game developer out there. If you designed a game, and made game it away for free, I'm sure your "marketing derpartment" and "finance Department" would be a little pissed at you because you would be losing alot of money. It's not them being greedy, it's no different then any other MMO out there. If you want a free game, then go play "runes of magic" or one of the other many free games.

For the past 6+years, or so, there has been 2 types of people when it comes to MMOs or Gamers. One type being the MMO buyers, that don't mind paying for the game and the subscription, so they can help fund the game and make it better. Then there would be the other people, that feel buying a game is pointless, not worth wild, etc. The 2nd half breaks down into 50/50, being half "I'll pay the monthly, but i'm not buying the game" and the other half being "I'll buy the game, but they arent geting my monthly payment". It's an on going debate, and without geting into anymore, you are clearly the part of this that wants a game for free, but willing to pay for the monthly. I'm sorry, but that isn't there business model (or any other sucessfull games business model), so dont think your ranting will change there mind, unless you have a way for them to get funded for the 1,000,000 copies they could posably sell due to offereing the trials. LMAO!!!

NOW, about the game. I enjoy it. Yea, there are some bug, and yea there is issues with endgame, but seeing how many other games failed resently on release, well.. i'm sorry,I feel they did a good job here. Yea, alot of people compair it to wow.. or say, it's Wowish and all. but, I guess we can say that wow, is EQish, and EQ is UOish, etc ,etc. I mean seriously. an MMO, is an MMO. You fight, craft, quest, battle, run rains, dungeons, etc. There were a few ya didnt, or wasn't as widly for some of the focus, like SWG, (yea, had questions, but you could be a social mmo, with no combat if ya wanted) . .There are others also. My point is, it's all the game, just different graphics, and all.

Try looking at what isnt the same.
Is there rifts in WOW, "NOPE".
Is there flying mounts in rift? nope!
Is there soul changing abilitys in wow? NOPE!
is there UI-Mods in rift (currently) NOPE!

if ya want to nitpick, I can, and I'll break it down to a programing level of what is different if ya really want? They arent using the same exact engine even, so please, dont sit hre and say it's all the same, when it's not! Every MMO, is different, unless they perposly design is exactly, or is a Server-Emulation.

I said my piece, hope to see ya all in game!

@Laurs Woah... complaining about having to buy a game... that's new. Every trial I did, where I ended up subbing to a game or whatever, I had to actually BUY the game. That's how this goes. I can understand Rift criticism, I think it's a good thing. But woah, this is seriously the most redundant remark I've seen so far. RIFT SUCKS CAUSE I HAVE TO BUY IT. ... okay.

For other people out there, I Have a code. BE VERY VERY CAREFUL. Because unlike all other games in the world, you have to buy this game. That's right, it blows the mind, but there you go.

it seems like the basic complaint at this point is

"it's to much like world of warcraft" (Where ass everything else except wow is not like wow enough -.-) Orrrrr "i have to pay for it"

now, collor me insane, but uhm... the wow trail ALSO has you buy the actuall game after using the trail, so does EVE, Darkfall, WAR, Age of Conan.... and Rift.

for me personally rift is a fun and polished game in a year (2010/ Q1 2011) that actually WORKED on release.

Well i loged yesterday and.. hm... 30 minutes later realized i've been watching my metal horse's ass all thise minutes, without having anything to do. PvP is pyrofest now, guess what will come the next month - big nerfbat. PvE - read dungeon grinding because there is nothing else, is gearcheck, people as someone said may laugh at you hard :D. They even buffed some of the tier 1, making it harder for the new players actually. Probably wont subsribe for aditional months, and will look for a way to sell the account.. I dont like having something that I payed alot and canot use.

Not to get into a flame war or anything but to say there is nothing to do is false. There is a ton of stuff to do, you simply don't feel like doing it. The game may not be for you, that's great, everyone is entitled to like or not like a game. But to say there isn't anything at all and your only option is to sit around on a mount in your major city is false. You can Rift, run warfronts, run dungeons, raids, craft, collect artifacts and all sorts of things. So really you just don't want to do any of those things. Seems that you just prefer a different type of game.

Just like a lot of people say there isn't anything to do in wow, but really that isn't true. You can level a new character, level a profession or archaeology or run dungeons and raids or pvp and play the AH. I simply don't want to do any of that in wow anymore because it has gotten stale for me. But if I were to say that there is nothing to do I would be lying.

If people do play Rift and hit max, know that the majority of the player base isn't at max level yet. So while it may seem like you are alone in the world, give it some time. Pretty soon players will be maxing out en mass and groups will be running constantly for anything under the sun. Some just have the patience for it and others don't.

Join Pyro(war)fronts? - no balance, thats mostly what i do though.
Dungeons - repeat the boring stuff, yes neat.
Artifacts? - useless things
Reroll? - and do the sleep-thru single player quests again, mm tempting.
Craft? - why bother, we got plenty of crafters already.
Play the AH? - they did not implement a simple option when you are outbid, to bid again from the AH sheet, you gota find he item yourself.. no TY.
Rifts? - they lost their thing in the early days, repeats, no actuall stuff to be worth bying with planar currency.

Yes, there are quite alot to do.. or you mean repeat?

@goatfoam. That is strange, especially considering I was a beta tester, preorder, headstart, foundry subscriber and I didn't receive a single emailed code in the last trial or this one. Guess me or my friends aren't good enough for them. Nice one, Trion!

MMO offering free trials within a month of launch = sign of failure.

Smacks of a desperate attempt to keep the servers looking fuller than they actually are.
