Interesting discussion on private servers. It seemed like you two mostly were talking about private servers for "dead" games, and I absolutely agree with your point (a similar discussion could possibly be done on, say, old TV shows that are never aired anymore and were never released on VHS/DVD), but I'm curious if you feel the same way about current MMOs that still have active servers and are still seeing developer updates that rely on subscription fees for funding. Or if we're talking about something like Guild Wars that doesn't have a subscription fee you could have players leaving the official servers to play on private server, which could give the developers/publishers the impression that a game is less active than it is, which may or may not have adverse affects on..... something. Not really sure there.

My gut feeling is that it'd be wrong, particularly with a game with a subscription fee that pays for the content still being developed for the game. Then again, I've never looked into any sort of private server so I have no idea how they "work" as far as content goes. If, say, a new World of Warcraft content patch comes out, I don't know how a private server would go about adding that content to their server. If they basically have to "design" it themselves then it doesn't seem like a bit deal, but if the content can be "easily" "taken" or "copied" onto the private server then I have an issue with that.

I guess something could be said for people having strong opinions on things they don't fully understand :p

Couldn't agree more with Rubi's comments/viewpoints on development of GW2 and the DEVs taking the time necessary to put out a 'Finished Product.'

You were both 'preaching to the choir' I think on this whole issue of game developers prematurely releasing games. Please don't feel at all hesitant about discussing this topic from your podcast platform... the attitudes you expressed NEED to be put out into the airwaves, otherwise we will all continue to suffer from these extremely poor business practices. Thank-you to both of you... *puts his fist in the air* rant on!
