I started late, and have about 13 days remaining until I must make this decision, but I'll admit I'm still having fun and have barely seen anything yet. I've been taking my time, fully exploring every corner of the world, running around looking for shinies {collections, and making a fortune selling my doubles on the AH}, trying to complete achievements, doing every quest, and jumping into every invasion I'm around for with the occasional rift here and there if its in my way.

So far of the 2 weeks since I've started, I've /played about 72hrs, my Eth Defiant ~ Riftblade/Reaver/Beastmaster is nearly lvl 31 and I've only seen Freemarch and Stonefield. I've moved on to see any of the other zones yet, my world map its all shaded in except those two zones...LOL I do have several quests for the Scarlet Gorge, but I'm still working on collections and stuff where I've been.

Anyway, if I decide to subscribe past the free month, I've already selected the 3-month founders plan to save some money...

@dudes

Yeah, now that I think of it, the only two MMOs that I have installed right now are LotRO and DDO. Both happen to be great games, granted, but RIFT isn't that bad either, so why is it gone from my system?

It must be because I just can't get myself to pay $15 a month for these games anymore. Especially now that I have less and less time to actually play them.
It's much better to simply buy the quest packs/expansions that I want, whenever I feel like it.

I honestly don't know if F2P is the way of the future, but it certainly works for me. Just don't ask me to pay $25 for a mount, or I'll show you a certain finger...

Hopefully this is in before the "all Rift" comments:

As to :
"What do you think? Would a free sticker make you want to play a game you wouldn't normally?"

Yes, yes it would. These are mostly games that I am curious about, but not too curious. You know the ones. You may be morbidly curious or some other degree of curious, but you don't want to set up a credit card or go through a long process.

I can afford games and subs now, too. I also learned a lesson with UO and EQ, wherein I let my card be charged but got too lazy to cancel it (people DO get lazy, that's how telemarketers get you with those, "Try it free for 30 days and send it back, but if you don't, we charge you." So, I don't give into that.

No. I'm so bored with standard fantasy MMOs that I won't even bother with f2p. I'd rather pay to play something different.

Granted, I will definitely be playing Guild Wars 2. So hypocrite maybe.

@Apakal Eh, everybody's a hypocrite at some point. Rift doesn't do it for me and if it were to go F2P I may not even bother anyways. I personally don't mind the sub, but with my $15 zune account, $10 Netflix account, and my Xbox Live account (what ever that amount is anymore I don't know) I feel that my computer/internet subscriptions are getting a little too costly to justify playing a game for $15 bucks a month. F2P is a good way to get a customer, like me, to get in the game, enjoy it and decide "Yea this is worth my $15 a month!" I don't dive into games with a sub blindly anymore after WAR and Champions. I still enjoy those games, but not enough to pay.

I too will be getting GW2 also, and I will find you there.

I played for Rift for a few months through alpha and beta, and loved the dynamic content, but when it came time to pre-order I suddenly had doubts.

Its not like Im against subscriptions, its just I couldn't help but feel the whole game was a (I'm gonna get down rated for this) wow look alike with random events but boring quests. Plus, after hearing that GW2 is gonna have no subscriptions Ive started comparing all mmos to the GW2 standards, and simply cant force my self to spend a dime on them.

So in my opinion either Trion should lower the sub fee to like 5 bucks a month or switch to a cash shop model, because I couldn't spend that much money because the game simply is not worth that much money.

I'm absolutely fine with a cash shop. I think its a great business model, where the customer pays exactly as much as they want to pay. I'm very weary of NCsoft but I have a lot of faith in ArenaNet so heres to hoping it will be awesome.

They seemed to do well with GW1 and in-store expansions. Everyone forgets about that. Plus, the current GW1 cash-shop is fairly lite-weight last I checked.

@Puremallace The "monthly fee" that is needed for extra development and game care will be provided by the cash shop (which according to ANet will not provide gameplay advantages), that and the expansions. It was done with GW over the years and I'm very confident they'll stick to it with GW2, the fact that GW2 seems that much more popular only enhances this confidence. ArenaNet will do it.

Nobody is saying that GW2 will finance itself with fairy dust. We all know it will have a cash shop, and based on precedent (obviously successful enough to warrant a big budget sequel) we know that game-breaking items won't be in it.

Paying for content/shinies and owning it for the life of the game? Sign me up!

At any rate, I would not play Rift for free because I realize now that I don't care at all for that gear treadmill type of game, no matter how pretty or polished it is. I wish it the best for those who dig it, though.

That's where you're wrong GW had like 5 millions players and GW will have at least the same number, may be more.I'm enjoying Rift right now and paid for 3 months but GW2 is the game that will hit Rift pretty hard.

Just to give you an idea how popular this game is.Right now we have like 400 people in Rift and there's like 200+ people waiting for GW2 in my guild.

I agree with the 5 bucks a month, I've been preaching that price plan to my mates all the time. I feel in this economy, we all can't afford to sub to multiple games like we all want too. But 5 bucks a month is totally reasonable and if companies were smart, they should adopt this. I guarantee sales would be that much better for them or just as good.

I agree. I think 5 dollars a month is a great price. I played Rift this weekend and enjoyed it, but I like WoW more. Unfortunately, this means I can't play Rift, too. I would pay 5 dollars a month in addition to my WoW sub, though. If Rift has one million players, that's 5,000,000 dollars a month. I'd say that's enough funding

I payed Blizzard sub for 5+ years... and they brought us cata... with archeology... and then ZG and ZA in patch 4.1... And the rest of the money goes into ANOTHER MMO they are working on that has NOTHING to do with my WOW characters...

NOW... should I be paying sub for that ? Seriosly ?

RIFT is a game that can built on what it has got. Its all up to the devs now to keep it going and improve it. Yes - I rather pay sub to RIFT than to WOW considering that BLizzard is not even TRYING to improve WOW with the new and exiting things for the money I pay sub for. Instead they charge me storemounts for 25$.

Did players of the original Everquest get their characters in Everquest 2? No. So Blizzard is making a new game, so what? And nobody said you have to use the Blizzard Store

Many game company statistics would say you are wrong about F2P not being profitable. It's always been profitable, particularly in Asia. It is getting popular here. Games have been saved by going F2P. It is basically "player psychology" that colors the misperception of this.

It's like what banks got used to doing; if they can milk money off you and charge you for checking instead of giving it to you for free, they make money. Now, all that revenue is gone. Sure, you get more potential money with subscribers but if they don't like the game over longhaul, they will leave. The market is flooded already with Sub-MMOs fighting for your dollar. Though I can afford it, if I don't touch it for a time, that $15 dollars could by me a nice big meal of chicken strips or another game.

It's not a question of having to log on every day for your money's worth as much as you may start to notice yourself NOT logging in as often and maybe playing another game and considering why you are spending 15 bucks for nothing.

The polar opposite: if an MMO is subscription-based, I am a little more interested in it than I otherwise would be.

This is how I see it too. I totally prefer subscription based for many reasons.
