"focus development resources on delivering two new MMOs based on its renowned PlanetSide and EverQuest properties"

Interesting, so we may see an EQ3 in development soon?

@Halldorr Everquest Next (not the official title) has been in development for some time and there has been screenshots and concept art released. Though it's been awhile since they've released more information on the new flagship title.

@Halldorr
The most recent stuff that they gave out was at Fan Faire this past year, which included a developers panel that discussed some stuff about the new game and showed some concept art. If I remember correctly from the reports they stated that they were still quite a ways from release and wouldn't give even an estimate.

A bit more info can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EverQuest_Next

Ah thanks guys! Apparently I haven't been keeping up on EQ news! Missed the EQ wave while playing Ultima and missed out on EQ2 and can't help but feel I missed out on something good so would love to keep up on a new release!

@Halldorr
They make EQ3 and I'm there.
While the original EQ wasn't my first MMO (UO and throughout the Asherons Call beta process) it was the first, and only one that ever gave me that "Wow...." feeling of being lost in a storybook.

Sorry to see people lose their jobs but this is what happens when the market is saturated.

@jpkustra Exactly, not enough MMO players for all the MMOs around.

Sigh. I can't even express how excited I was about the Agency. I even have a list of "spy names" I had planned for my characters.

Best of luck to all the former employees

Sorry to see that happen as well. Hopefully they'll be able to find work with other companies that are ramping up.

I was looking forward to The Agency as well! Sad to see those assets will probably never see the light of day.

Wasn't the Agency hinted at being released really soon? This is quite a surprise. Also something doesn't add up, did 3 studios work on the game?

Anyway best of luck to all who lest their jobs ...

@Dumac

They always hinted at a release "soon", but info kept coming out slower and slower. The last thing I remember was a game trailer about a year or so ago. No new info.

So, this was not all that surprising. I kinda think it turned into a "black Hole" for corporate and they finally axed it.

I was looking forward to it, but with no new info, I am not surprised to hear they are closing it down.

I am sorely disappointed that The Agency will never be released, but am very excited about the next Everquest game. I think SOE has learned a lot from FreeRealms, and will remain competitive despite the wishes of those who mindlessly hate on them.

@enamelizer I dunno know hate is a wasted emotion in general Most of the hate come from guys who are old enough to be my dad ...it's just a bit over the top IMHO especially from a so called grown up.

@Dunraven You have no point, no substance in your words, all you have said is the last defense of someone who has no point.

@ Halldorr EQNext has been in development for about a year now?

I bet The Agency surfaces again as a non-mmo format. Or maybe sold off to another development house to work on. I doubt they're going to toss out all their hard work. It was also too close to planetside. I didn't see a point in releasing two FPS MMO's. Or they're merging the gameplay of both into one..I donno. A mystery.

Why was the Austin team reduced? They just handle SWG and DCUO?

@Yellowdancer

I think you kinda answered your own question.

In summary SW:TOR will be out in July-Oct period and that pretty much kills whatever is left of SWG (Maybe the JTL bit will keep a few people since SW:TOR went with the dumb space on rails idea).

And DCUO has been badly handled resulting in it being pretty dead. (It is in desperate need of serve merges , UI revamps and more duo, HMA and raid content - and less holiday content)
