@InventionExchange

SOE can't lower the number of developers involved in Vanguard, because there aren't any left for a long time now.

I believe Vanguard is in the studio that they only cut 1/3 the staff on. I think its safe since it is in maintenance mode only.

DCUO and SWG are in the studio that they cut 50% on. Has me worried cause Smedley said they were keeping the whole DCUO team and it looks like that may not be the case. And I doubt they cut SWG staff unless they are going to cancel all future updates.

It's typical how some “news sites” are actually celebrating this ( as in dancing a Jig and opening up bottles of Champaign )

People may be losing their livelihood and the only means to support their families in a uncertain economy, and titles that many people were excited about may never see the light of day…..and folks are actually happy because they hate SOE for whatever asinine reason?

As I have said before; I have and always will love games, but being classified as a “gamer” is an insult to me.

@Dunraven

I agree with you 100%.

This is really bad news for MMO's in general. SOE is one of the larger MMO publishers/developers. They do bring in a lot of revenue. I can't imagine anyone other than blizzard bringing in more revenue(not profit, revenue). If they are feeling the crunch, imagine what other MMO studios are going through. I really think the genre is going to crash in on itself due to stagnation...I just hope this isn't the first sign of it.

Of course, this could just be a total change in direction for the company. Maybe moving into console development instead of sticking to PC's.

@Dunraven

Yep, agreed here!

And I'd like more details. We know the Studio working on "The Agency" is covered but the rest is just speculation, even from the source.

I must say, news about "The Agency" has been this weird sort of trickle/buzz/trickle. It seems to be taking longer than usual to release it than SOE's other efforts (I think it was announced either at the same time as DCUO or before it).

So, maybe development in this particular game is stifled since, corporate-thinking wise, it may be viewed as a "black hole" that money goes in but doesn't come out?

I guess they could just start hiring unpaid interns to act like they are working on Vanguard although I thought they were already doing that.

Bummer! I was really looking forward to The Agency. Hopefully it still gets released at some point. Best of luck to all of those who were laid off. It's a tough job market out there right now.

Lets hope this is an early april fools day joke.
Also, I think they'd be more likely to stick to PC and get rid of the ps3 thing than the other way around. Judging that they just now are getting Free Realms on the PS3, it must be a huge time and money investment to port the mmo's to the PS3 with more or less no garuntee that ps3 players play mmo's, or are willing to pay for a subscription.

If this is an April Fool's joke, whoever initiated it needs to get their nuts zapped. I'd like to think that people have better things to do than joke about people their losing their livelihood. On the flipside though, actually losing their jobs because this is true sucks even worse.

Hmmm you don't hear about Blizzard laying people off... SOE, learn something?

I really hope The Agency doesn't get scraped :(

@Zantom Judging by the post-Rift server populations in WoW...don't b so fast in thinking they're immune to layoffs

@ManaByte

Perhaps, but then the could just release Diablo III or the next installment of Starcraft II, or put more resources into Titan, etc...

I feel sorry for those staff affected by this, assuming it to be true. I hope it doesn't impact too negatively on the existing titles, especially from a personal view EQ and EQ2, as well as the development work on EQ Next, but as for the Agency that has been vaporware for so long now that I haven't believed in a long while that it would ever see the light of day.
