RIFT's March 30th update bringing live events, exclusive items, new 20-man raid

RIFT is about to pass the one-month mark, and Trion's fantasy title is marking the occasion with an update that's bringing a good bit of new content to the war-torn world of Telara. Beginning on March 30th, Regulos the Destroyer is taking the gloves off, and Ascended heroes will have "a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of a key moment in the game's history," according to a Trion press release.

Alsbeth the Discordant will lead invasions across every Telaran zone, and players who brave the hordes will earn hundreds of new items (including exclusives like a spectral horse and transmogrifying disguises). Trion also tells us that once these rifts are sealed, the unique loot items will never again be available.

The update is also bringing a new 20-man raid zone to RIFT, and the River of Souls encounter will test the mettle of Guardians and Defiants alike as they battle Alsbeth's undead minions and attempt to bring the fallen mage to justice.

Not to mention RIFT is hot property right now. First game in awhile to be released without Bill Roper sized issues that's getting a lot of attention. Thus this game seems like a breath of fresh air to many. Why would Massively not be writing about it frequently?

Writing about popular titles in the MMO genre is no way to run this place!

hmmm I wonder if they have some sort of discrimation with the letter, Z, or even W?

thats smart marketing, having a huge event the same week most of the subs that started on launch day are set to expire. good plan for fighting the dreaded month2 drop. I expect there will still be a good number of people walking away without subbing past month1, but well timed events like this should help soften the blow.

...juxt opposed to that recently realeased hero MMO by SOE whose name I will not mention ("does the shifty eye thingy"), which drops holiday quirks on their updates after the holiday question is long over on a game that essentially bare minimun at best. I doubt that's going to help keep needed player retention. Just saying.

@Puremallace problem is that once you do a live event, it's history. It's a lot of effort for something that only exists for a short time. Chances are the 20 man raid will have more lasting impact.

Wrong... Asheron's Call did this over 11 years ago so did Matrix Online. This is a well polished game but none of these ideas are original, they are just arguably done better. I personally think that the game is in it's honeymoon phase is overrated. It is a decent game but I believe this is more of a desperate cling to anything that's halfway decent to finally quit wow situation for a lot of players than anything else.

Yes, because every other game has had "original" ideas. I mean hey, just look at WoW's latest notes about "guild challenges". Completely original there, eh? Where else have I seen the PvP/Dungeon/World guild quests before? Hrm.... Oh wait....

First I don't even play WoW so I am not a wow fanboy. I am saying that a lot of people that think this game is the greatest thing ever are ex-wow players who were just looking for an excuse to leave WoW. Second, the nothing is new and original line is neither new nor original either. That sir is a facile argument.

RIFT is a good game, and the devs are very good with their community. I hope it does really well.

And hey, not Massively's fault that the game has lots of news recently. And remember: they still don't have their own joystick website, maybe if the quantity of news/attention continues as this, they'll just get their own website with dedicated writers like WoW Insider? ;)

@Carolina Oooh... a RIFT Insider site. Not long now, i'd bet.

Im very close to buying Rift... I played the Demo and enjoyed it but right now SC2 takes most my time alone with Dragon Age 2.

rift is a very fun game, i was hesitant to try it, but now that i have, i love it.
i will be resubbing

yup, gotta people people's attention! this is a good way to do it.
