Everything these days is a non-mmo mmo. Welcome to the norm.

I'm really getting tired of this match-making crap being passed off as an MMO. Character progression + Match Based PvP + minor COOP-RPG elements does not an MMO make.

I for one, find it refreshing that the DEVELOPERS are telling us, that they're trying to design a game without the obvious hooks of calling it an "MMO". At least that means they're "getting it" and realizing the heavy handed stigma's attached to the notion of how MMO's are recieved, and marketing.

I wish these guys the best of luck, and i for one will be following how this project goes. They're trying to make a fun game first that should be able to appeal to the typical gamer in 2011, and then let us call it whatever.

@Kalex716 There's a stigma? It's Massively Multiplayer Online. So it's anywhere when a bunch of people, play with each other, using the internets.

Or does MMO = WoW for people?

Anyway, I saw the long videos of the game awhile ago, did not look like anything I'd ever be interested in.

MMO does equal WoW now unfortunately. MMO was supposed to be a feature added to whatever type of game it is ala MMORPG or MMOAction but instead MMO got turned into a "genre" that is made of long hours of suck to get a feeling of personal achievement. So they have to think of some other name for the future because MMO is now tainted.

I don't care what kind of game they want to classify it as, I want to play it. After seeing a preview video of gameplay on this title I been waiting to hear more on it. Glad to see you guys will be covering it. This is the first I have even heard of them being at pax east. That's a shame because in my opinion this game deserves some attention.

The vid I saw it looked like a small group was out collecting resources and instead of just clicking on "nodes" and trying to avoid mobs they called in an extractor from space and then defended it from a zerg while it collected resources. Looked like a lot of fun and a good way to get people that might not be into crafting/resource collection involved.

Semantics and labels aside, it looks like a pretty cool game to me.

bleh more micro-transaction/"freemium" stuff. I can tolerate subscription fees for quality games that are expanded in a way which warrants a subscription but the industry wide attempt to make all games subscription based - or failing that MT based.. is rather annoying.

@Waxil that was actually a concern of a large part of the player base. I'm pretty active in the community and felt compelled to tell you that its not freemium to the degree that you are thinking. Its not going to be pay2win or anything like that. Red5 is making a game that they want to play and a game that a community of gamers will enjoy. The second part is that they want to get this game into the hands of as many gamers as possible so it will be free to play. The cash-shop will be almost all cosmetic or time-saving items so there won't be any velvet ropes (according to the lead designer and the ceo)

Interesting that they attempt to avoid the term "MMO" because of the negative connotations and stereotypes that designation brings to the table. It comes down to Dice-rolls/Minmaxed stats VS Skill of the player. I love that Firefall is focusing on the skill of the player's abilities and bringing that to an mmo-type game.

There are about 25 various hands-on reviews from Pax East since yesterday alone and one of them mentioned how the "match-making" for PVP matches will work, and the answer is that it is extremely integrated seamlessly into the game world so as not to ruin the immersiveness of being in the open-world PVE game. The re-focus on making the core combat super tight is a good sign and will make or break this game, luckily they realized it even though they had to scrap their earlier combat engine resulting in the current delay.

I'm one of those who likes the artstyle although I do hope they have an option to remove the cartoon character outline in the manner that Champions Online added that option, although I prefer the look of the thinner outline in Firefall to that of CO.

I'm currently totally sick to death of non-playerskill based dice-roll stats driven games/MMOs in general and have only been playing competitive shooters lately and am really glad I returned to the genre as I had almost forgot what was missing from 99% of MMOs these days. Firefall, the two upcoming Tribes games and the new Planetside sequel can't get here soon enough. At least there is plenty to do during the wait.

@Slayblaze

I sorta agree with this logic. Even as DCUO were calling themselves an "Action MMO" during Beta, many players were coming onto boards and bringing their expectations with them and no matter what I said to them, they didn't seem to listen. Many people still see the letters "MMO" and automatically tack on "RPG" onto it and that is not limited to just "role play" but building up an avatar's stats and gear, which could apply, since it uses the same mechanics, but it is not the same goal (a more apt term would be "With Stat-Building elements").

So yeah, until players figure it out, best to avoid the term or invent a new one.

To my understanding a true MMOG has three parts: 1) hundreds of players in a single world 2) those players can interact with each other at any time 3) you cannot play start to finish without teaming up with others

Plenty of games considered MMOs really aren't. The developers of Guild Wars even called their game a CORPG and not MMORPG.

From what I've read it sounds like TOR does not fit the definition of an MMOG either.

Oh cool, another gimmicky combat game that says it's primarily based off "skill". Sorry, but any game with "classes", especially support classes boils down to a comp/counter-comp meta game in 99% of the situations.

Cool, it doesn't have dice rolls, there are a number of games moving away from that and removing dice rolls doesn't automatically make the game take more "skill". Seriously, if you want to play a shooter that is based off of skill, play Counter-Strike 1.6 or earlier. The only "decision" that wasn't entirely skill based was which weapon to buy.
