Great interview. I love how honest and upfront Scott is when he speaks too. Most times, he's spot on.

Good stuff. Thanks Massively.

Rift is a great game. It's the tried and true EQ style of MMORPG. The class system and public event system is where the real difference is between it and the others in the same genre and style.

One thing that needs to be looked at, though, is the game engine. It crashes on a variety of hardware and Operating systems and really puts systems under a lot of stress. Some systems temperature rise more in Rift than any other game. My own system has a lot of problems with the game, and there are feelings that it might be damaging systems because of how demanding it is.

This needs to be looked at. Players are reporting only being able to play the game stably in Alternate Render mode, which looks fairly ugly. There are 40 page threads on the Tech forums about the issue, but Trion doesn't seem to have a handle on what's happening. I love the game, but this needs to be addressed and spoken about by Trion publicly. http://forums.riftgame.com/showthread.php?91620-UPDATE-Hardbooting-lastet-patch-graphic-error

Did I mention that the game is a heck of a lot of fun, and perhaps the most polished MMORPG I've played...since WOW TBC ^_^

@Gel214th Without even questioning whether or not it's a good game, I will point out that it is absolutely not like EQ.

@Gel214th

This was not the right forum to link that thread and it seems to be a very small population of ATI users. I play on an older system (Intel Duo Core, 8800 GTS) and the game has been rock solid since I started playing in beta 6.

@eyeball2452 It's a fair amount of players having issues. And it doesn't seem to be tied to any particular mix of hardware/software. It will never be a majority of players, if it were the boards would be in a mess. But you can say the same thing about the hacking issues, or the gold spammers. It's a 'small' amount of people who have reported being hacked on the boards in relation to the number of people playing the game. But it is a real issue. And this is open to public comments about the game, it's pluses, minuses and everything in-between. Why shouldn't it be said?

@Keen and Graev It is like EQ in the sense of the hotbar interface, the types of quests, the fantasy setting etc. Just as World of Warcraft can be compared in that sense to EQ. They are all cut from the same cloth and have the same underpinnings. As opposed to say something like City of Heroes, or Champions Online or Vindictus which would be difficult to say "Like EQ" and leave anyone with a general impression of the game.

And Rift has grabbed me like no other MMORPG in a long time. I think it's a winner. My only reservations are based on my personal hardware issues with the title.

I have about the same set-up but with crossfired 8800's. The game was good during Beta and first day of headstart, after THAT PATCH came out, it was unplayable by me. I even tried another computer I have and still doesn't work. And, now I really can't test it, because Trion is asking for a credit card along with my 30 days free. I could give them a card or even buy a time card, but since this problem seems to STILL be there, I can't in good-faith.

So, yeah, it may not affect you or your friends, but it is affecting me and others. I wonder if my free time is melting away, even without a cc?

Very happy to hear about the focus on security and on killing the gold spammers. These guys continue to impress me with their responsiveness.

I understand that a lot of folks love RIFT I seriously don't understand the hub- bub, I tried several times during beta and was bored out of my skull, and the RIFT community makes WoW look like a bunch of polite respectable individuals.

I do wish Trion world all the best but there success is beyond baffling to me

You can't generalize like that, since it varies from shard to shard.

So far, I'm very impressed with the positive atmosphere on Firesand, and so are several of my friends.

@Dunraven The beta community WAS the WoWbies checking it out, trolling everyone, and leaving. Honestly, I've been playing since the headstart and have yet to see one [anal] trade spam train, or any of the other wowbie nonsense.

Pro tip: disable [1-9 chat] and have fun!

@Dunraven The Defiant community is WAY worse than the Guardians. It makes sense since everyone wants to be a rebel and whatnot, they also have it stuck in their heads that the "good" side has all the kids. Almost everyone I've met on the Guardian side was between 20 and 50. PvP servers also have terrible communities. As for only playing in the beta... It was basically open to everyone, of course the community was bad.

The boredom issue, however, is completely based on the user. If you don't like the way an average MMO plays, you probably won't like Rift. It uses the same mechanics that work and are enjoyed by the players of most other MMOs.

In Beta the WoW tourists were all over the game. that's why the community sucked. Now it is much better. I don't know EQ2 community but compared to WoW this community is way more mature.

That isn't any more true than when people say it about other MMOs using two faction systems. Either you're unaware that you're using a generalization or you're intentionally doing it to troll. Either way, it's it's a bad argument.

@Dunraven Don't know which server you were on during Beta, but my experience is the Rift community was really no different to any other MMORPG. There were trolls, idiots, helpful folk, goofy comments and humour in general chat. The forums also represent the normal spread.

I can understand the 'more of the same' comment. *shrug* Don't expect it to introduce a ton of new systems like Secret World or Guild Wars 2 are supposed to, or AOC/CO/DCUO have.

I think Trion got abit lucky with the launch since WOW managed to screw up an entire first content patch of Cata. So quite a few bought the game and will give it a month. Me included. Its a good fillup but its so far from beeing at acceptable state in many departments. The graphical optimiation is very bad - the movement in game is sluggish and slow (wich should not be the case in game launched in 2011) and there are defenetly quite a few issues that Trion is ignoring, like the patcher issue and new FPS problems after latest patch.

Im still gonna try my best to enjoy the game for the month and a week I got it subbed for. I will take my time - read the quests and try to get immersed abit. I love the many spec systems cause it makes you able to try to find the spec you like - even tho we all know that the op spec will soon become more and more obvious and the real Balancing and begins with the whining and bugfixing.

But like I said. THe game is just a filler atm since patch 4.1 in cata is so week. Trion needs to improve it quite alot to make me switch over full time. For that the movement and travel both on foot and mounts need to speed up (they are talkng about slowing it even more in PVP zones?) and they will have to focus alot on new content.

But alot off ppl already know the weakpoint of the gameengine coming from WAR and Tiron will hit the same issues. Now the need to role up their sleavs and really get to work. There is alot of things that need to be optimised and tweaked and huge list of things that will be exploided. Mythic got that totally wrong in WAR - left the expoids up for weeks and it ruined alot of the game. Its gonna be the same in this one. ALL pvp content is exploided to death.

And fineally - about hackers. When will MMO devs learn to NOT put things like mounts and such basic things into the game bought with ingame gold. We all now that this is the main reason we see such huge number of hackers. Both alot of ppl is willing to go buy gold cause who doesn't want the coolest mount... and the hackers have a great way to get information about the account while at it.

So... again TRion is yet another company that fails the basic in that regad.

@Deadalon

You're entitled to your opinion, but the game is rock solid performance wise, even on lower end machines. Rifts and invasions, have been very smooth in similar situations that originally caused WoW to crash and even cause problems now in their PvP zones.

It's really disappointing how people either feel the need to troll new games or have some personal grudge that affects them or a very small group of people that they need to blow up well beyond the actual level of seriousness that the issue poses.

@eyeball2452 You keep dismissing performance and hardware issues.
But it IS true that people are having serious performance errors. The game does not use SLI or Crossfire hardware to best effect. That needs to be improved (and the devs have said so, I believe they are working on it). The game is REBOOTING people's machines. It is freezing and crashing. Not making this up, it's happening.

You can argue that it is people's Power Supplies, Heat or bad Memory. But it's happening with Rift, and prior to Rift these people played other games without a problem. So without it necessarily being causation, the mere fact that there is correlation with Rift makes it a Rift issue that needs to be addressed.

When it works, it works very well. The game is beautiful with shadows etc. But people who are having issues are dropping the game to Alternate Render mode in order to play. Which makes it look quite bad in comparison to normal mode.

@eyeball2452

Trolling ? I pointed out the issues Ive had and come across. I am playing the game and I have played WAR and I know the engine very well and how it behaves. Im not more of Troll than you are a fanboy.

I recomend ppl go into the techincal section on RIFT forums and have a quick look on the issues that are coming up. More and more exploids are also beeing found out and all of this is very much typical in a new released game. Now the devs need to show us how fast they are gonna squish these things out of the game. Thats their job and we expect them to continue doing it.
