The time has come for Autobots and Decepticons to roll out into the MMO world! As of this morning, we've heard news that Hasbro has entered into a contract agreement with Jagex (most commonly known for its popular free-to-play title, RuneScape) to develop a brand-new game based on the incredibly popular Transformers IP.
While details on just what players can expect from the Transformers MMO are still scarce at this point, the release states that the developers are aiming to launch the game sometime in 2012. Will this also be a free-to-play title, considering Jagex's experience? Will this be geared more toward children than adults? Will we be able to build our own super-awesome Transformers or just play as iconic characters? At this point it's all up in the air, but rest assured we'll keep our ears open for more news.

2012? Don't most serious MMOs take at least a few years to develop? So basically this is going to be another rushed to market piece of crap attempting to capitalize on a popular brand name. Super.

@Apakal Don't underestimate Jagex's ability to ship. Almost all of the money they've taken in went into development tools, which is why Runescape HD ships easily four or five times as many content updates per year than any other MMO. And working from an established IP, they don't have to do any art design. They need time to model the characters and to rapidly generate an urban setting for them; the rest, they can do as fast as you or I could write pen-and-paper dungeon crawls for D&D.

@Apakal if FF14 proved anything, it's that you can't judge an MMO by it's development time. :-\

I loved transformers as a child, but I'm getting sick of zombie 25 year old plus franchises being constantly remade and pushed out to me.

@maty of course it's for us too, why bother licensing Transformers at all? It's a zombie franchise, trying to cash in on nostalgia out of safety when they could take risks. I mean, we've had what 6-7 different iterations of them so far?

Obviously Go Bots would have been a far superior choice.

I wonder if this game will have a shapeshifter class.

Okay, we're proving with this announcement that NO IP is safe. Not a single one of them.
Now that we've clarified that, WHERE'S MY BATTLETECH MMO?!

Does this really need to be an MMO? can't this just be a TFC type game?
