I find this guy a lot like American McGee.....neither of them are really worthy of the fact they are more famous then the games they help create.

"Let's face it: These games attract not only all manner of gamers but also the most casual of non-gaming users,"

I'm sorry, but the most facebook does is attract the latter. If any competent person has played the Dragon Age Legends game, that is about as far from fun as you can be, and considering that was aimed towards the "gamers", it doesn't speak well at all.

And of course he relates to Ultima Online, as far as I'm aware, its the ONLY game he was attributed to that has managed to survive. I'm sure he remembers TR as "that one thing that paid my space costs".

The ignorance is astounding in this post. TR didn't "pay his space costs", he financed most of that with his own money that's he's earned over the years and years of making amazing video games. And he had to work his ass off in order to get into space, it wasn't just a matter of paying a plane ticket. Educate yourself before you spout off:

So the only ignorance in the post was about TR paying his way to space? Other then that I would say the OP was pretty accurate.

Way to overreact BTW.

Are you one of those guys who have been acting like two year olds over on the Dragon Age Legends Review area?

The game IS fun. You guys are raging about "having" to play it to get Dragon Age 2 unlockables. But you don't *have* to play it. It's just an extra option. They aren't essential to the story and aren't needed. But you rage about it anyway. The game gets much deeper and goes on for quite a while (something most of the people who've tried it for 15 minutes and then think they are fit to review it don't seem to understand). It starts to get pretty difficult and need real strategy to play through the battles too. To try to tell others what their game tastes should be and to further try to insult people who do like the game - that is two doses of ignorance pouring out of you at once. Did you choke when that happened or are you so used to it that you barely noticed?

A great many FaceBook games are extremely fun and very popular. Like it or not, that is the truth. And they are no less intelligent than the mind numbing MMOs where time and randomness equals power. At least on FaceBook people are intelligent enough to play short gaming sessions rather than spend all day sitting on their rears on a game.

And FaceBook in general has a more mature community than you find elsewhere. It's probably because most accounts there are made under peoples real names. When people are linked to their real identities they are much less likely to act up. Guys and Girls get along better there than anywhere else online too. There are no stupid jokes about girl gamers there, there are actually even less weirdos than you find in the average client game.

I like client games as well, but the FaceBook community is actually on a more mature level than you find elsewhere online especially for such a large community. The games are just as valid and fun as any other games and a number of them are even better. Like it or not browser games are a hugely growing business and they are only getting better as time goes on. You can play far more intelligent games there if you choose to than you find in any MMO and there are other games that play exactly the same as MMOs too - heck you'll even be able to play a lot of standard MMOs through your browser soon because of new technology.

People who don't use FaceBook much seem to have a great lack of knowledge about what a lot of the games have become like that you can play there. But the fact is there that many millions are playing and more play games there every day. Do all the name calling and petty insulting that you want - it doesn't change that fact.

@MewmewGirl

You mean on the social board mew? I haven't checked those forums since DA 2 was released, and the last thing I bothered about was the unlockables.

And I have played the game Mew, and just because you found the game "fun", doesn't mean its fact. That's Opinion 101 right there. Its barely decent, but once I had unlocked the last item in it, I stopped playing.

They still haven't ironed out any of the issues that have existed since Beta started, turn orders still seem completely out of whack at random, dropped gear remains as random and useless as always, and it still forces players to rely on an obscenely priced cash-shop should your luck run a little south.

And for someone who is trying to fight a stereotype, you seem more than willing to abuse them as long as they aren't aimed towards you. you also seem to be the only person to be "raging" right now. Oh, and an Ogre getting 2-4 turns in a row despite having lower Agility than my characters does not count as "Strategy".

Ultima online is not the only ultima game, and that series is the inspiration for not only your precious Bioware titles but also the likes of the TES series.

in addition to that Origin's Wing Commander series is the spawning point (in conjunction with X-wing/tie fighter) of pretty much all space based combat games and without the Privater titles (part of the WC universe BTW) the likes of EVE simply would not exist.

additionally if you didn't have System Shock pioneering the way for exploration/alternative solution gameplay there would be no Bioshock, Thief, or Dues-Ex.

and finally the crusader series essentially "made" the destructible environment "rampage" style of gameplay that makes Red Faction (and the like) so enjoyable. hell, Red Faction pretty much WAS a pixel for pixel 3D revisionment of Crusader 2.

the fact is that if you back far enough just about every thing we all love about PC gaming can trace it's heritage to Origin in some way or another, and most every current big name developer running a studio ATM got their start either working directly for Richard Garriott or working for someone that got their start working for Richard Garriott.

These games did not pioneer the genres. Elite was around looong before Privateer was a gleam in anyone's eye, and Telengard was around before the Ultima's, though Ultima 1/2 certainly made a big splash in the scene around that time as well and certainly deserves a nod for the genre.
