What's Jack Emmert been up to since surfacing briefly to talk about Neverwinter a few months ago? Apparently climbing the corporate ladder, as Cryptic has just announced via press release that the game design veteran has been tapped to serve as CEO of the company that brought us Star Trek Online, Champions Online, and way back when, City of Heroes.
Emmert is replacing John Needham and says that, while the latter will be missed, Cryptic remains committed to developing AAA gaming experiences. "I co-founded this company and am extremely proud of everything our teams have achieved. We will continue to set high goals for ourselves and under my leadership we will continue to meet them," Emmert says.

CoH is their one good game to date, and it got a lot better once it was out of their hands. The more I think about it the more I realize CoH more or less blundered into success, almost as if by random chance. It succeeded despite Cryptic, not because of it. Truly lightning in a bottle.
Next step for the Emmert one: the ruination of Neverwinter.

My thoughts exactly. I recently tried CO Free for All, and then even invested $15 to try the custom frameworks... thinking I must be missing something. I wasn't.
It's like City of Heroes was the game they made after Champions Online, learning from their mistakes and creating a solid game. CO just feels like a botched test game. It's almost surreal.

More like... "HAHAHA !", the laughter of people mocking thoses who spend money on their products.

Sorry. Basic trolling.
I hate Cryptic with passion.

@Zuljundwumn I, for one, enjoy Star Trek Online immensely and feel it is money well spent. I'm sorry that your sanctimonious preconceptions have kept you from enjoying a great game.

Everyone is entitled to it's own opinion.
I Believed in Champions for a long time (spending LOTS of money on the c-store), before losing faith.
I also tried STO, and in my opinion, it's one of the worst game ever made. Forget the license and look at the game.
Anyway. You like it ? Good for you, honestly. I enjoyed playing Saga frontier on Ps1 even when people were saying the game was crap.
It's not only about the games, it's about the way they act.
For my part, I regret investing all this money for a game company that treat it's customers like**** by delivering half finished games, and makes lifetime subscribers pay for some content that should be free.
When i play lotro f2p, I don't feel swindled.
When I play CO, my wallet feels raped.
And it's also about how they brag about their studio being "prolific", like "we develloped CO in a year !".
...
Yeah, right.
The game was a disaster at release.

@Zuljundwumn I won't argue with you about the state of the game at release, because I wasn't there.
But since DStahl has taken over, I can honestly tell you that the devs feel like they are a) listening to the fan base, b) trying to address all problems, and c) incorporating pretty refreshing ideas into the game.
The reason I get pissy when people throw insults at STO specifically is because their complaints are often based off one sour experience at launch or beta - which therefore makes them feel entitled to put down the game relentlessly, regardless of whatever improvements or changes have occurred since then.
Didn't enjoy the game at launch? Fine, you've made your point. But don't go making baseless accusations towards a development team that you haven't experienced in over a year.

@cowboyhugbees
Now you're the one making baseless accusations.
I'm a lifetime subscriber, and I play champions regulary. I wouldn't bother If I didn't paid for it.
I come back for each update, and each time my opinion of cryptic goes down a bit.
Take the demonflame for exemple : Great adventure pack.
but it took them MONTHS to release a scenario that you clean in 2 hours. Ok, they also updated the summoning powers, but for what ? There were no new content to use them in, exept this short mission. Ok, you can do it again and again, but it gets old very quickly.
And months after it's release, there's still shameful bugs in it. Like how you don't get any reward for finishing it half the time (WTF ?? Isn't that the point of playing it once you did it for the first time just to enjoy the scenario ?) or when your face is getting pawned during cut-scenes by mobs.
For Sto, I Tried it.
I REALLY didn't like it. And it had the brand "unfinished, unpolished cryptic game" on it, shining with spotlights. But I still continued. I always think if there's a community on a game, it's for a reason.
But honestly, if there was no Star trek license around this game, nobody would bother to play it.
It has some good ideas, I don't deny it.
But Cryptic people don't know how to make a F****** game.
that's my opinion, based on my experience with Cryptic since CO's lauch.
...
Andgiving them credit for CoH isn't all that fair, the game became what it is and started to introduce awsome innovations when Cryptic guys left.

They need to decide if they are a AAA company or a small MMO developer. They keep flip flopping on this.

Or at least they shouldn't pat themselves on the back so much for being able to crank out new MMOs and rush them to market when the quality level isn't remotely near "AAA"

Every Cryptic MMO has the building blocks for outstanding success...and yet, something fails to hold it all together. I wish I could be more optimistic about Neverwinter, but really, the math isn't on their side. It's such a dynamite IP, and I'm still willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Or just change the goals I suppose. That does seem to be what Cryptic has done a lot of. Unless their goal was to be the first MMO to be content-lite, charge a subscription and knock people up for microtransactions on top of it all.

Can't wait for Neverwinter! No seriously.
This company has made two awesome things.
1. Single server architecture
2. Character generator
They suck at game design though. Give them the D&D ruleset so that they don't have to botch their own rules and it might even turn out okay. At least they didn't buy D&D because then they would feel cocky enough to screw it all up (Poor Champions).
Iff they could become an industry leader in user generated content then they may find their niche. The foundry in STO actually sounds like the coolest thing about the game.

Neverwinter isn't going to be an MMO though, Cryptic already said it's going to be a multiplayer game closer to Diablo or Borderlands. So server architecture won't matter much for this game.
That's also why this site has already said it won't cover Neverwinter's development.

@Aganazer
I am looking forward to Neverwinter, too, although I am doubtful that Cryptic can pull off the rich story, creative characters, and well-crafted world that Neverwinter deserves.
Still, I love that the game will be a CORPG (with optional player grouping and/or the use of henchmen). That kind of setup (yay, Guild Wars!) is really a better fit for me than the (yawn....) traditional MMO/LFG format.
