Judging by a new (and slickly produced) dev diary video, Gazillion is spending a fair bit of money on its new Fortune Online MMORPG. The video features a mixture of in-game footage as well as commentary from producer Ricardo Mendoza, design director Adam Maxwell, and senior content designer Chris Holtorf. Most of the discussion is focused on two of the game's classes, the Master of Arms and the Disciple of the Dragon, which belong to the Warrior and Guardian archetypes respectively.
What's an archetype?
"Fortune Online has several classes that you can choose from but we've done something to sort of simplify it for more casual players. We've boiled them down into very basic archetypes," Maxwell explains. Check out the full video after the cut.
This game actually looks pretty interesting, though maybe it's just me being tired of waiting for Torchlight. In any case, there is a high likelihood I will try this game out. Whilst the name of the game doesn't make much sense, the gameplay and ease of use says more than a name could.
My biggest fear is that once everyone starts having fun with this game, they'll do something stupidly abusive, like what Free Realms has done with their model. Maybe that's just me not trusting it only on the merits it's a flash game...
Hah. Free Realms... A name that evokes various emotions. A great and wonderful game that went and changed models. It used to be you had all of some classes and none of others. They changed it so you have the first part of all classes, but you don't have all of any anymore. That was just...lame. I'm a paying subscriber when I play, so it didn't affect me a lot, but I still felt it was pretty lame to do.
I've been playing the beta of this game here - Fortune Online. It actually is like a browser based Diablo game and better than some client based Diablo clones too. They're still getting the various characters done tho - releasing them semi slowly into the game. It is fairly interesting plus it's quick and easy to play a session through your browser. It doesn't look that bad really and plays okay so far. It isn't as smooth as a Unity engined game but it still plays pretty nice.
