AOC failed because it was a half finished and buggy game from the get go. It might have fixed some of the issues but it will never recover cause the money that should have been used to ADD to the game - was instead used to fix the broken game at launch.

OMG AoC Failed! By Crom! I guess that explains why so many of us were playing it for the last couple of years and having so much fun. Thanks for the update, so glad you here to tell us these little gems of information. Mitra be praised!

With so much magic in the game (casters), the AoC is no longer recognized as merely a Sword n Sorcery game but another generic fantasy game.

@Hurlbut
Do you know what the word Sorcery in Sword n Sorcery means?

Maybe you should invest in a dictionary. That's a book that describes what words mean by the way.

Im very interested in this. I trialed the game for a very short period and i really like the combat in it. which is always the first thing i notice. The graphics and world look great too.
I recently quit WoW after 6 years and have been looking for something new so AoC of course doesnt quite cut it but i did enjoy the gameplay.

"a long-term look at what it's like to go from Tortage to endgame (and everything in between) is something that you don't get a lot of in the gaming press"

I agree with this. I hate the short reviews that a lot of other media groups give for video games. With MMORPG's you need more research like the classic news show 60 minutes. We meed more investigative reporting that is based on facts. For example, at times I wish G4 had a serious respectable news show on video games that gave an intelligent review based on actual in depth investigation and real journalism instead of a small sweep over what compares to a poorly conducted one night stand that is more comedy than ability. Two seconds is not skillful mounting for an industry that generates billions of dollars in tax revenue.

I also wish the official US AoC forums would be less hostile.

I did buy AoC, and I did enjoy my free month. Unfortunately, I just can't afford another ten clams a month for it. So yeah, if it went F2P I'd be in like a road runner with a ass full of dynamite. And I had no idea it was already F2P in Korea. Lucky buggers!

The problem with CMA and Conan is that you wouldn't get much beyond Tortage and people would be more interested in 'the world'. Reviewers and everyone has done Tortage- you don't need to do it again- I think you should start at lvl 20; that's where things start to get really interesting.

I suppose that when Secret World comes out as P2P that might be a good time for Conan to go F2P. I hope not- it's a very good game and Conan's pretty undervalued and cheap right now.

@Liltawen

Actually I'd get well beyond Tortage since the series would be ongoing pretty much for the life of the column or until readers got bored with it.

That said, I'll probably include a start-at-level-20 poll option when we get to that point.

Thanks for the suggestion.

This could be entertaining. I'd hate to give Funcom money. but running around with the Massively folks would be worth $15 I suppose.

This game going F2P would definitely get me to play it, and some of my friends as well. The main problem these days seems to be a matter of "how many subs will you have concurrently?"

For me, I don't allow myself to pay to play 2 games at any given time. Right now, my two games are Rift, and WW2 Online. I'd love to have some AoC action now and again, and also games like STO, but atm they're just not worth another $15/mo. fee. Too many games, too little time.

I feel the same way, and actually for me F2P makes it worse. I already play AoC, EVE, Xsyon, and dabble in Aion. I'll also be playing TERA, TOR, and other upcoming titles. Regardless of what any of these things cost, there simply isn't time enough in the day to seriously play more than one or two MMOs. Sure you can technically log in and tour the newb zones for a week or two, but that's not really playing an MMO imo.

There's just way too many games for my liking, lol. I'd prefer a few of them get together and consolidate into one ubergame that has all the features that I want.

Completely off topic, but there you go.

I loved AoC for the first three months. Had some of the best PVP times in any game ever during launch. But then populations thinned and end game became stale. If it went F2P though I would definitely be right back in there. TBH i think the whole subscription model needs to be dropped from all games. I mean, if Guild Wars 2 can do it then it just shows that everyone else working on a subscription model is just greedy.

@vaughan42 The whole purpose of any business model is to maximize profit. Whether the company chooses subscription or free to play the goal is to make the most money possible. A business model is not chosen so the players can pay less and the company make less. Its not greed, it's business. These games have to make money or they will go under.

Another thing is the money isn't mainly used for the devs and publishers to buy fancy cars and jewelry. Most of it will be plowed back into the game so that it will remain updated, current, and desirable to play.

I am confused, Jef. YOU would be the one being the writer for CMA in AoC? If you have been playing for so long, wouldn't we want another writer who has no experience with AoC to play and write in CMA for AoC?

My point to that is, we already know you love AoC. I do too. I WANT more people to give it a try.

I think the way to do that is to get a fresh perspective and have them run around with the veterans and let them show the writer the in's and out's of the game and then write about their new experiences.

And I agree with a previous post.. it would have to be post Tortage.

Also, if the CMA is only a few weeks, they would need to have access to a level cap toon so they can see and understand the post 80 progression. That's a whole other game in itself.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

@Nautius

Not sure where people are getting the impression that it would only be a few weeks, I specifically said in the article, and then again in the comments, that it would be an ongoing thing (probably until the game shuts down or the column shuts down).

To your other point, yes it would only be me writing this version of it since it's my personal column.

That's not to say that the main CMA series won't someday feature AoC. Maybe it will. Thus far though, it hasn't ever gotten more than 10% of the vote, which is one reason I felt compelled to do my own version of it here.
