The only 'thunder' Blizzard has had recently was the thunder of rage they got when they tried to shove that RealID business down their player's throats.

Call me when they produce something that isn't a reskin of a model they made 4 years ago and maybe I'll be impressed.

@Nenene

We're still talking about RealID? That was July.
A lot of Cataclysm had a lot of new content, but its not worth trying to explain. I can tell from your attitude you're one of those guys who will find reason to hate Blizzard no matter what they do.

I just find it hard to believe you think they made three full expansions off reskinned models.

There is very little recycled about the new 'ZG' instance aside from the geometry (wow insider has a first look article if you are interested). Personally I'm thrilled to see them coming back, especially because Blizzard is actually advancing the storyline and I want to see what has happened (and what has changed since I raided it many moons ago).

People will look for an excuse to complain about anything.

And people in love with World of Warcraft will look for any excuse to support Blizzard's design directions unconditionally.

I actually agree with both of you here. I generally find I agree with Blizzards decisions once the intention is explained, though.
Is there any other developer that puts out the sheer amount of free content patches, though? Its a serious question, not a jab.

Still, as much as I like blizzard, my account is on hold for Rift.

I think quite a few developers put out just as much, if not more, free content.

WoW's expansions don't ship with a ton of end game content, so they have to keep giving you a new raid instance every few months to keep people on the treadmill interested. All of this stuff is more-or-less planned when the expansion hits, so it's not like they're releasing free content out of the goodness of their hearts. It's more like a calculated time release of content to keep people interested.

When's the last time WoW got a free PvP content patch? I'm pretty sure it was Vanilla WoW when they put in the first 3 battlegrounds.

3.2 added a battleground.

Each expansion has added a bg, cata added 2. Not sure we need free pvp content with 8 battlegrounds, but that's just my opinion. I find arena pvp more fun.

How much raid content is in the other p2p mmos currently? I'm trying to look at their wikis (such as Aion/AoC) and can't find answers.

I stand corrected, they did introduce IoC in 3.2.

It's a terrible BG, but I digress, haha. I stand by my original claim that other producers put out just as much "free" content.

The implication that I am somehow a blind Blizzard fanboy is amusing.

I simply think it is funny that people are complaining because the new instance happens to be based off an old raid. IF it were just a re-release with the powers and hp scaled for the new levels, I would agree, but the new instance is completely different than the old raid aside from the geometry.

Also, they obviously planned for this as there is a series of quests in the area that set the stage to answer the question of 'what the heck happened to ZG anyway?'. To me, this shows that it isn't some lazy thing they just decided to toss together ('crap guys, we need something new and easy for the next patch!') but something they've planned for a while now.

There are many areas where I disagree with Blizz, but this isn't one of them.

I'm sorry, and which game company does release additional content out of the goodness of their hearts? LOL

@KvanCetre "Free"?!

I hate the idea that somehow, after already paying a subscription, the content is somehow "free". Stop letting Cryptic destroy what you think an MMO sub provides.

I'm pretty sure AC has more "free" content patches then WoW.

By the way, that 'free' content you're talking about might just be covered by the monthly subscription many millions are paying each month. It's hardly free.

I find this to be extremely odd coming from Blizzard of all developers, being that they hate to recycle content. Its like whenever a new expansion releases they do everything possible to funnel players away from the old zones, to the point of making it where you have to go well out of your way to get back there. Or by playing a new character and naturally going there because you kinda have to.

Personally though, I love content thats recycled, though not on the level of instances because you're still playing with only a handful of players with no interaction with the rest of the community. There are two MMOs that come to mind that recycle content very well and thats FFXI and LOTRO.

And I love it because it keeps the world feeling lively and active, and no matter what level a player may be, you will almost always be running into masses of others often enough to not feel lonely and forgotten.

Its all about the community...

I always thought it was a huge waste that they let old raid dungeons die every time they release a new expansion. Since nobody will ever use that content again, retooling it for the new level cap seems obvious. I'm surprised it took them this long.

I can appreciate ''recycled'' content when and if it's done right. The naxx and onyxia remakes were horrid but i really liked the the deadmines and SFK remakes.

It depends on how it's handled. Revisiting the same area to do different bosses with a different story really isn't recycling (like Deadmine and Shadowfang Keep). Redoing the instance and just modifying the boss fight without updating a story reason for going there (like Onyxia) it not all that interesting. A middle ground would be Naxx, though I think that could have been better done.

I expect Trion to do the same things with raids. My problem was blizzards scaling. There was no reason to bump us 100,000 hp in an expansion. It was just silly.

As to your question, I guess development time.
Btw, I'm playing Rift, but its far too early to judge end game at this point.

No one wants sideways progression. No one wants to slog through equally difficult content for minimal reward (at least no one in the WoW playerbase).

MMOs by nature are carrot-on-a-stick (in the current model). Take away the carrot and what's the point. Make the carrot and the turnip just as good and you diminish the value of both.
