As one of those adventurers who embarked on launch day those 12 years ago I can honestly say that, still, no MMO has been able to achieve that level of immersion and "epicness" that EQ had.

I don't think it's just misty eyed nostalgia though. Rather, I think it's mostly due to the length of time it took to level a character, the continuity of server communities, the vastly smaller size of the then-MMO audience, and the incredible unforgiving elements of the game systems. As a level 10 char I "knew" the people I was grouping with, rather than in most modern MMOs where you don't see any level of community appear until max level (if that).

Agree.

Since I'm not a "Facebook" or any "social" network user this contest is denied me...

...and thus it has come to yet another publisher doing shameless promos on facebook lol.

But yes, one of the best mmo's ever made (pre-instancing expansions tbh). And to this day I still don't need my hand held. Many devs can learn from this example (pre-instancing expansions tbh).

Only 12 1yr subs? ...
*shrugs*

Heh it's partly a case of "this is where I experienced an MMO world first."

I feel the same way about Ultima Online. Most of my friends that I still game with I met in 1998 on UO.

Actually, I'd point out that while the contest is on SOE's Facebook page, it requires you to email in the answer, which stops it from being exclusively a Facebook contest.

I just tested and you can see the important pages without being logged in to Facebook, so you can enter. Well, so long as you're eligible according to the official rules, etc. etc. ^.^

The rules are at:

And the images are being posted on:
http://www.facebook.com/SOE

Hope that helps!

To all you folks who played EQ and helped get the genre started: thank you!

Actually, EQ wasn't the first mmo on the market.

I know, but it was still an important title for MMO's.

I played from launch and for 6 years until soon after instancing was deployed (I hate instancing solo gaming). I'm not sure of it's significance regarding the mmo genre, other than it was one of the good games on the market (there were a number of mmo's at the time). imo UO was better - 2yrs older and really popularized the genre. Meridian 59 (4yrs older), was probably the first modern mmo - though we didn't call them mmo's until 97. Before that, we were playing MUD's, which are mmo's but just text based (still around and popular) - though some had/have graphical interfaces. But significance as in it changed it all for mmo's? No, not at all. Not even WoW can claim that... other than spawning a lot of wow clone fails. EQ may not have been the first, nor the game that popularized mmo's, but it was fun.

Meridian59 is usually considered "the first". When people do their history articles.

Well it is in the west, eh? But I could never figure out Korean games *shrugs*
btw, M59 was transferred back to the original developers, and they decided to run it donation based :)
Sooo... EQ 12yrs = 12 free 1yr subs. M59 16yrs = full access free play for all. Either M59 is on the ball, or EQ has 4 more years left? ^_^

Funny thing is, that 12 year old chat interface is probably more user friendly then DCUO's. =p

Congrats on 12 years EQ!

And then we have all those MUDs and stuff before those :p

Thank you for helping make one of the early, modern MMO's a successful venture so other companies would risk taking the plunge. Every bit helps :)

/just wanted to say thank you, not get into history ;)

MUD's were great, and still are :D I worked on one years ago before I got into working on our modern graphical mmo's. Great learning exp to start in MUD programming before anything else... though I don't program much anymore compared to content development. Actually, many speculated early in EQ's run that it was actually ripped from a MUD code base, though later that was cleared up as being a hoax. But still it's a lot like it ;) How's that for a history lesson? :)

EQ introduced raiding, love it or hate it.
