@Miffy
It's not necessarily a mistake, they will probably need them for the first 30 days and it will keep those that log in happier.

I would personally rather have too much capacity at launch then too little. The more people can get in game on launch day, the better for the long-term.

Have you actually played the game? Have you watched it completely explode at headstart (!!) when they actually added several servers on the first night to have them get full as well? That was only HEADSTART. Yes, on headstart all their servers got full. And you know what people said when they saw the number of servers ready for headstart? Lolol it will WAR all over again lolol empty servers. Didn't stay empty long did they?

I think it's safe to assume official launch will bring more people than headstart. I think it's also safe to assume Trion has numbers on sales. I'm sorry, but this is without doubt, one of the most successful launches ever. Am I saying this game will continue to be such a success? No idea, I don't have a crystal ball. So please, don't pretend that you have one. And please, play the game, educate yourself, before commenting in the annoying one-liner way as if you have all the data.

The game's fun, don't get me wrong. I preordered and have been playing in the head start and will continue playing. But you are horribly naive. Just sayin'.

You know another game that had a successful beta (not as successful as Rift's no, but that's irrelevant) and a decent launch? Warhammer Online. Would you like to know where it is now? Nowhere. It's gone stale.

I'm not saying Rift will go stale, I don't think it will at all, I am saying that Warhammer Online had many servers on it's launch and look what happened to them. It doesn't matter how successful a game is at launch if it doesn't stay successful 6 and 12 months down the line. Seeing any number of server merges is incredibly demoralising to the current player-base as it makes it look like the game is decreasing in popularity (when that may not be the case).

LOOOOOOOOOOL

Its WAR all over again. in 2 months half those servers will be gathering dust, and they will have to deal with the negative PR that comes by shutting down so many servers so soon.

man, game devs NEVER learn. frikin hilarious

@Fabius Bile. Only people with little or no common sense will assume server merges mean a game is failing. People with more than half a brain cell will realise that it is probably a sign that the developer is doing what is best for its players by trying to shepherd people into the same place to make it more enjoyable.

People have been saying for a year that Warhammer or AOC will close due to server merges but as far as I know they are still going.

Everyone seems to be complaining about too many servers. I think its great as Trion are listening and doing whats best for the customers to prevent queues at launch. The current servers are about right for head start people (obviously some people will leave or transfer meaning the queues will be less or gone) whilst the launch people will go to the new servers. So what if there are too many servers, in 6 months they will just announce free server transfers and people can go where they want and the servers will still be populated and vibrant. People hear "server merge" and automatically assume a game is failing, but thats not true - they will probably announce free server transfers at the same time as announcing a steady playerbase of 2m to assure people of its success!

Rift will have less than 300k players by the 6 months mark, from there on its all downward. thinking they will have 2m is moronical at best. gonna love the egg on your face bud....

@Fabius Bile. Can I have a go of your crystal ball to get next weeks lottery numbers? You must have one as you are stating as fact events that have not taken place yet, which are also contrary to current indications.

@Fabius Bile

I doubt it will be that low, but I equally doubt they will break the one million mark.

As what a lot of people are missing is that they have one million registered accounts, not preorders, not subscribers, but REGISTERED accounts.

So we'll see, they'll probably settle somewhere around the 400-500k mark like EVE/Aion.

Please, I think a lot of us play WoW here, and hey, I have my reasons for finding WoW stale at best at the moment. But I don't feel a need to constantly poo on someone else's favourite game based on my purely biased views and apparently, clairvoyance. Play Rift, then come back and comment.

They also have 1million registered accounts so far. Yes, many of those will cease to exist in a month, and there will be many taking its place. I am not sure that Rift will be super successful, I really hope it will be. But at least I don't pull numbers out of my behind like you do.

I like to know where Fabius Bile got Trion's 2 million projected figure from for RIFT. I never heard them make that claim before. So I guess it's "pulling magical numbers out my ass" to prove a flawed point. Nice troll? /shrug

There's so much rage around this game it's hilarious.
People are getting annoyed because their game (War, Aoc...well, the list is long) were a failure at release (i'm not saying they were bad games).
Trion is releasing a good game, polished, with few bugs, and lots of people willing to pay for it. Of course the pop will decrease after the free month, it's a fact. But Rift has everything a game needs to be a hit. deal with it.

@Zuljundwumn it doesnt, deal with it. Rift is a step forward compared to the past games, but a step forward from a tremendous failure isnt exactly a megahit.

Rift offers polish and bugfree gameplay. sadly it also presents us with exactly the same gameplay many others have, namely WoW. to the last comma.

I dont think Rift is gonnna close anytime soon, but Im fairly sure it wont be the hit some people thinks it will be, by a laaaarge margin.

because its a WoW clone. Its simply illogical, people who likes WoW gameplay are mostly playing WoW. You have to offer something significantly different, or the same but significantly improved. Rift does neither, its just the same WoW offers, just with a very smaller scope (because obviously a game at release cannot have the same amount of content as nother that has been out for 6 years and 3 expacs) and a different background story.

its good that game devs have learned to release polished and bug free games. Now they have to learn to not copy WoW, and instead offer innovation. Rift will be the living proof that a polished clone can and will fail to meet expectatives.

@raysie34 wrong in what? in that Rift will fail to meet expectatives, or in it deserves to fail to meet expectatives?

"Hey guys, i dont want any innovation, I dont want any originality. I just want you to use a game engine marginally better than the ones out there, and make the exact same game Im tired of playing for the past decade. Make it polished and I will gladly pay for more of the same."

do you seriously want to send this message to game developers?

@Fabius Bile That's the message that WoW players sent to Blizzard is it not? WoW was nothing evolutionary. They took what others had done before it and put their own spin on it. Rift seems to be doing the same thing and doing it well.

Time will ultimately tell, but I suspect this one will maintain a strong user base for a while.

@Zuljundwumn

Putting aside the idiot rantings of Fabius Troll, I too am weary of the projected success fo this game. I smell a locust mentaility with it's player population. Where like AoC, Warhammer and Aion (West) did very well on box sales...but has done far less with it's longterm subscriptions, the bread and butter of the respected games' income.

RIFT too, has a very big danger of falling into this...especially when it has stiff competiton on it's horizon, such as Tera, SWTOR and GW2. I personally hope for the best success for this game...but to honest, I am not see'ing it right now. Only will it's subscription numbers tell after 6 months the long term health of the game. Even then, with the asfor mentioned competion, that's tenous at best.

I really hope to be proven wrong. :(
