Rift is amazingly lag free considering it's getting hammered. Lag was only a minor issue for me twice. I'm pretty impressed. They were also very good about rolling out new servers to meet demand. I think Rift was $50 well spent. =D

Pretty much perfect launch. And yes having queues and not launching new servers until the old ones are full is perfect. Queue != Full. What it does show though is that large guilds should chose their server on launch day and not before. My guildies are enjoying a long queue when we could have decided to roll on a new server instead... yay.

Hype + Open Beta. Mission accomplished.

Now lets sit back and wait 4 months.

I have to say I've been very impressed with the performance of the game as well. I have a fairly powerful system, but I can't even manage to play City of Heroes on their new Ultra mode. With RIFT, I kept cranking all the graphics settings up and it still ran great--even with piles of PCs clustered in the same area.

@Ninevah
I'm playing on a PC that struggles to handle most recent games, and the RIFT beta actually ran fairly well on it at low-to-mid settings. I was very impressed.

I should mention one irritation that I have, though: I pre-ordered the physical Collector's Edition of the game (mostly 'cuz I wanted the soundtrack) but I don't get my Collector's Edition special items (like the free mount) until the official launch on March 1st. Crap! The time when that mount is most useful is those early levels. By the time March 1st comes around, I'll have enough money in game to buy a mount. Trion blames the retailers for that problem, but that doesn't seem to make much sense to me.

@Ninevah

I saw hundreds of those mounts running around yesterday. Did you check your mail?

@Dezyne Yeah, I did. This problem happens only if you ordered the physical Collector's Edition. If you ordered the digital version of the Collector's Edition, then you got the full code within 48 hours of placing the pre-order. There are some posts on various forums about this. Apparently, it was discovered a few weeks ago and people have been complaining about it since then.

Some news site reported everyone who pre-ordered gets the pre-order mount. The pre-order mount will be de-activated on launch day for all players who haven't entered a CE code.

@Yellowdancer Yeah, I'd seen that reported somewhere as well. I'd found other sites that confirmed that those who bough the physical CE wouldn't get the CE bonuses until they had their retail copies of the game. So, I was pretty confused. I checked my mail in game and had only the free pet and the sourcestone rune in there, however. Did folks who got the turtle mount get it some other way than in their mailbox?

@Tbah I finally logged a support issue with Trion at their site about the mount 'cuz their FAQ says that all items except the backpack should be given out during the Head Start. They finally got back to me this morning and had corrected it, though their explanation was confusing. So, I've got my mount now!

I logged in as soon as the servers came online yesterday, customized my toon, and selected my name by 3 minutes after live, only to find out that someone got the name I wanted within those 3 minutes. I cursed.

My guild chose 2 servers, one for Guardians and one for Defiants. Most of the guild was able to get online, eventually, and get the guild established in both places. When I got home from work, I tried to log back in, and there was a 2+ hour queue on both servers.

I wasn't really too upset about it because this gave me time to watch Community, The Office, my DVR'd Modern Family, as well as read through some of the people crying on the RIFT forums. THAT was some funny reading - all those "OMFG I'm quitting because I have to wait" people. I wanted to encourage them to quit so it would help reduce the server queue. :)

When I did eventually get online, everything ran smoothly despite there being 50 of us all standing around on top of each other. I can't wait to get home and play tonight!

Being a late-night player, I usually skip most of the queues. Hah!

Besides nearly every server being full, I can't complain. I had the graphics at maximum and even during the non-stop rifts popping up, I didn't experience any lag or slow down.

Got logged in after they took the servers down in the afternoon immediately and made my character. Played for an hour until my wife got home and she had a 30-40 minute wait in queue but she got in eventually as well.

Extremely smooth launch, gameplay feels fantastic, did not miss raiding in WoW at all last night. I sure hope that new feel doesn't wear off too fast.

Very smooth launch so far. While it is true that a few of the popular BEta servers were packed full within minutes of the game going live, with wait quues of about 18h, the new servers went up quickly and without hesitation, and the only people (at elast ine europe) unable to play are thsoe refusing to reroll on a different server.

It beats a launch like Aion's, where ALL servers had massive queue times, at least for Rift, as long as you are willing to roll on a newer server, you wont have much of an issue with queue times.

I couldn't get on the server my buddies are playing on, but no worries for now; I picked the first shard I could get on without waiting and rolled a cleric to get a feel of the game (I got beta invites early on, but never used them).

It's to be expected, but the amount of whiny WoW kiddie trash kicking and screaming is nothing short of out of this world; the game is smooth, I was able to participate in 3 low-level invasions without a hitch with plenty of players and it was very enjoyable.
