Good breakdown, for me, I do step one, but, IMO, I am pretty sharp and balance it with reality/common sense. I also stay open-minded. It really prepares me for Part 7-Reality vs. Fantasy. There's just so many "pie-in-the-sjy" ideals and dreaming. I try not to crush them (because, lack of conclusive proof) but really, programming can only do so much! :P

Really, I tend to enjoy Beta forums alot. After launch, not so much. The magic is gone. Things are pretty much cut-and-dried. The game can only change so much with new features. I tend to accept games for what they offer at that point, although I do offer suggestions.

But yeah, after all the pre-beta,beta, and launching, when I get to #10, I tend to quit the boards. A wave of "exhaustion" washes over me and, for better or worse, I think, "My job here is done." And I move on to the next.

Even though this is supposed to be humorous, I'd like to point out that EvE and Darkfall have never been compared to WoW except in how much different they are from it. I'd also like to point out that there have been several articles posted on this very site providing "A WoW players guide to" this game or that.

Perhaps if developers didnt do their best to make a game similar to WoW, people wouldn't associate it so closely to a game they're clearly emulating.

Incidentally, how much did you enjoy the RIFT beta?

Thanks for the article, but if you want to shame readers into giving RIFT a try "and letting it be the game it is instead of what the community tells you it is" then you're going to have to use a little more subterfuge than that.

@KDolo : exactly!! The main reason so many games get compared to WoW so much is that they REALLY DID COPY LARGE SLABS OF DESIGN from it. No, it's not just that "all MMOs are similar". It's not just that "it makes the games easier to learn". It's that they COPY LARGE SLABS OF DESIGN from WoW.

I know Syp likes to pretend that this isn't the case with Rift, but really, it's the worst offender I've seen since the original Alganon launch.

I find it refreshing to just not care about MMOs at all until they are about to be released. THEN look at basic info and see if it's worth the usual game price +free month.

I did this whole list with Warhammer, and while I do think Warhammer is a good MMO, the fact is doing this just ruins the game for you, no matter if you turn into a rabid fan or a challenged troll, you end up caring more about stats and facts then the actual game itself.
It's like console gamers who obsess with metacritic or like score for games. It just goes beyond being a game and some weird online social obsession.

In fact, that's my philosophy for any type of entertainment now a days.
No a little, but don't dissect it, burn it, revive it and dissect it again.

Yeah, I really enjoyed the Fantasy v. Reality picture, that was great.

As for the article, that is why it is a good idea to not ride the hype machine and instead just play the game for what you enjoy in it, not what others enjoy in it. Don't feel stupid for liking something that people around you don't like, both in game and in real life. Be your own person and enjoy the things you enjoy.

Made me chuckle.

Sometimes the order is different, especially how much more quickly the WoW comparisons can kick in, but yeah...

Interesting article coming from a site that capitalizes on nearly every phase of pre-launch hysteria.

That being said, MMO developers could easily eliminate much of this behavior, if that was indeed their desire, by avoiding the 3-year long buzz they somehow feel is necessary to generate before release (I'm looking at you SWTOR).

@Plastic

Haha yep, this website generates revenue by ensuring we go through this cycle for every game that comes out.

As to your 3rd phase "the game changer". This is brought on by the developers imo. How often do we hear about shoot-for-the-moon features in an upcoming game only to find out later the devs have no real clue as to how to implement them.

@Dogorox

For example, PvP combat while flying in WoW. Heck, it was even one of the features listed on the box for Wrath of the Lich King. Never saw the light of day.

But they're all just ideas on paper. Anyone who takes it seriously before its actually implemented is just fooling themselves.

One of the more comedic articles I've read in a while.

Don't know what was funnier, the article or the Hello Kitty avatar at the end...
