Once or twice per year, EVE Online players across the world are gripped by the desire to destroy everything in sight. During the nine-day Hulkageddon bloodbath, players compete to destroy as many mining ships as possible. A variety of prizes are then handed out to individuals and corporations with the most kills or for special achievements completed during the event. The event was first organised by pirate Helicity Boson back in 2009, and so far it has been responsible for the destruction of several hundred billion ISK worth of Hulks and other mining ships.
The event has come under fire for promoting griefing, as the primary method of gaining kills is the use of suicide attacks in high-security space. Hulkageddon supporters argue that it's a perfectly legitimate way to play the game, and EVE's sandbox-style game design and rules do permit it. Whether you like it or hate it, Hulkageddon has become a regular EVE tradition. To avoid a grim fate, miners should probably take a break between February 19th and February 28th. Head over to the official forum thread for full details of the impending carnage and the prize fund available for participants.

This event makes me smile every time I read about it. I do not play Eve Online but things like this are very entertaining to read about. Gotta love all the scandals and mass destruction that goes on in that game.

I'm a nullsec miner so I have nothing to worry about. :-)
Enjoy not mining, while I stick my lasers on the best ore in the game the rest of the month.

As an addendum to the Brendan'spost : the targets for Hulkageddon 4 have been expanded to include Industrials, not just Mining type ships.

Haven't they said that their targets are really macro miners? I believe they have said if you are careful and watching your ship you can easily get away?

Hulkageddon is almost everything wrong with EVE in a nutshell and why I won't play the game. The concept of a bunch of griefers whining that people who aren't pvping are playing the game "wrong".
The rest of what's wrong is of course the fucked up "bigger = more mobile" strategic concepts behind corp vs. corp PvP, and combat tactics pretty much solely consisting of logistics and assist trains.

We're happy to not have you, let me tell you. Hulkageddon is actually entirely in the spirit of EVE. A sandbox, player-run world where (almost) anything goes is the draw. There's nothing "wrong" with that, but you're welcome to your opinion.
Hulkageddon 'contestants' aren't complaining that "if you're not PvPing, you're not playing right" They're simply out there for fun, and maybe win a prize or two. The majority of kills, as the article says, are done in high security space, usually costing the killers a ship or three. It's a fun event for a very interesting community.
Yeah, sure, there are people who are your usual smattering of internet twerps, but if Hulkageddon drives you away from EVE, you may be misunderstanding it in the first place.

I'm glad they're killing all these damn Hulks.
Maybe it's just me but I hate how populated the game is now, you can't get any space to yourself. I liked the old days where it was just 5000 players at peak time because you could have systems to yourself. Now it's like Hulks everywhere stripping every belt and mining isn't viable any more in high sec. I hope loads of them rage quit in the process or CCP open more servers so space isn't so crowded.

@Orvi They are blowing up mining ships and indies that have less tank or defense than frigs, and abusing concord rules so that they can't be shot at first by others to dissuade them. yes, it's very much in the spirit of the carebearism they call PvP in EVE.
They need to make events that get people involved in real PvP, not this carebear stuff.

Hulkageddon is getting to be as old as mission running. There was a time it was fun...not so much anymore.

Don't they have the guts to shoot anything that can fight back? What kind of a competition involves expending zero effort?

@ndessell You don't pilot mining barges do you? They are one of the slowest aligning ships in the game. You also can't run away if you jump through a gate and they suicide gank you on the other side.
The best defense is either to go cheap (t1 frig or cruiser mining) go wormhole, or go mission.
