Everyone's talking about the new progression server that launched yesterday in EverQuest -- and it seems that so many people are trying to play on it that they've outstripped its capacity. Players have reported that Fippy Darkpaw, a special server that's rolling out EQ's expansions at a measured pace, has been crushed by the crowds trying to log in.
As a result, Sony Online Entertainment decided to create a second time-locked progression server named after the game's infamous dragon Vulak'Aerr. According to the company, the server went online today. This should help relieve the stress on poor ol' Fippy. If you're curious about what a progression server entails, SOE's set up a helpful FAQ to clarify the details.
Players on EverQuest's other servers shouldn't feel left out of the celebrations, as they'll be enjoying a double XP weekend from February 18th through the 21st. It is important to note that this XP bonus will not apply to the new progression servers. During the same weekend, SOE is marking down a number of items in the Marketplace for a President's Day sale. You can read more on this special weekend over at EverQuest Players.

Interesting. I wonder if Blizzard will ever cave and start up a new WoW progression server? I know a lot of people who would love to participate in the War of the Shifting Sands event.

Well considering it took EQ like 9 years to make the first progression server and it really only works when you have quite a few expansions to progress through id say WoW has a while yet.
A progression server that would take 2 months to fully progress would not be very exciting.

I don't know who the second place winner in the previous poll was, but they probably should've gone with that name (although, it probably WAS Vulak'Aerr, knowing the one time I did not research and put forth a cold opinion like this! :P ).
I don't know too much about later EQ-history; but Fippy was much "beloved" and unless that dragon pulled similar tactics to Fippy (like storming a place continually and dying, while yelling out to the zone) or some such, they probably should have chosen from that line of "fun" characters. But, just my internet opinion.

You've been a wonderful audience. I will be doing in town all week, doing my stand-up routine along with my Groucho Marx impressions.

It has been amazing seeing hundreds of people running around in the starting zones grinding and grouping up. Something I thought that I would never see again. :'>)
