Legendary game creator Richard Garriott raised a few eyebrows when he announced a foray into social gaming last fall. The MMORPG maestro and occasional astronaut seemed a rather unlikely candidate for the casual games space after spearheading the likes of Ultima Online and Tabula Rasa. In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Garriott revealed that he's taking no prisoners when it comes to his new endeavor, offering his views on the large number of crapware titles cluttering the casual space as well as his company's plans to distribute its tools for free in order to help standardize the sector and raise the quality bar.
"There's tons of small start-ups who we are seeing take lots of investment and lots of activity and large acquisition costs -- who are creating, literally, junk. Stuff that people aren't playing that much and if you play it it's not much fun," Garriott opined.
Garriott's new company, Portalarium, has thus far produced Port Casino Poker and Port Casino Blackjack, both playable via Facebook, and is now shifting its focus to a new title that has more in common with UO. Details on the new game are slated to be revealed over the next two weeks.

RGR is game genius. Its a fact.
Even talking about Tabula Rasa. If you played it you would know that in parts it was finished it outshined everything
It was more fun to play than WOW , it had more dynamic events than Rift
It was NC soft that killed it

From now on I am going to call anyone that makes a single mistake a burned out loser. Seriously, do you guys even hold yourselves to the same standard as you do RG? The guy has decades of success making some of the most classic RPG's of our lifetime then he makes one stinker and everyone lines up to kick him under the bus.

@Aganazer Amen, brother. It's like saying Spielberg's career is trashed just because someone didn't like "1941" or "Indy IV". Nobody bats 1000.
Anyway, I still have much respect for RG. And I'm looking forward to more details about this UOesque game...

Frankly I never put much stock in "Lord British" and I think his time has passed. I mean, why does he not get off his a$$ and make Ultima Online 2 already; he can't be so out of touch that he doesn't know people are wanting something like it. Talk is cheap RG, show us something worth playing that maybe has that old school feel we know you are capable of. Sounding off like that feels kind of lame when as a well known game developer you have had no decent games under your belt in years...

It takes more than 1 man to make a triple-A MMO. Garriott may have been a gaming genius when he was working on his own on the early Ultima games or in a small team on UO before the industry got started - that doesn't mean he can run the big teams needed for MMOs these days, though (TR may even have proved that, not that I think we'll ever know the full truth of what went on behind the scenes) - I'm not convinced lightning can strike again for him.
I'd file him next to Brad McQuaid in the MMO has-beens category.
When it comes to MMOs these days I'm not interested in individuals with a talent for self-publicity, I'm interested in teams with a good track record.
