@Green Chili

Hey Chili, good to see you're still having fun in Agon (I'll be back too, I've just got the dreaded game-hoppers disease, heh).

Darkfall's combat is miles ahead of Earthrise at this point, no doubt about it. My hope is that Masthead takes a page from Aventurine's book and rights the ship over the next few months. Darkfall had a pretty horrific launch itself but is now a solid game.

I like the idea of this game, but if the crafting is supposed to be the selling point, I'm hard pressed to waste any time playing it. I'm not playing an MMO to craft things, I want good gameplay and a good story.

Game Companies really need to re-evaluate the small-cash MMO business model. This is a clear case of "we need money now in order to continue development" so they throw it on the market at $50. In process they piss of a whole metric ton of people who buy it because it clearly is not worth $50. (Think FFXIV)

Honestly, if that is the business situation then they need to figure some way to do a "soft-release" or "paid-beta". Basically let players play for like $5 a month or some rather small amount of money to play a "development" product. That way they get a little cash flow, hopefully from a larger audience than they would boxed sales, and can continue development.

The problem is when you put a product on shelves and charge $50 people expect something, and when that fails, you may never get the chance again. If you tell people, hey you can play for 3$ a month, but it's buggy and rough while we continue development, then I think you'll find a surprising number of players willing to commit. It's all about managing expectations and being honest with players.

Oops. Looks like I spoke too soon.

There appears to be a bit of a login issue.

Hmm, looking forward to the crafting article. Does the game allow for advancement purely through crafting, or do characters have to progress in combat to open up more crafting abilities?

I've been keeping an eye on this game...I've visited the forums several times, and I have to say that the issues players are complaining about don't make the game sound very appealing at this point. I like what I've seen as far as the depth of the proposed mechanics behind the game, but if players still can't log in, or can't do anything productive when they -do- manage to log in, the depth of gameplay is a moot point.

I'll still keep an eye on it though, and when I get my new comp in a week or so I might even buy-and-try, I've got $50 to blow. People are always crying for "innovation", but as has been debated on the SWTOR forums it isn't the big budget, triple-A titles that are going to deviate drastically from the established MMO standards and give you that innovation it's the small, niche titles. I'm willing to give an indie developer a little more leeway when the quality of their game falls short if the premise of their game looks promising, but even that extended patience has it's limits. Hopefully in time Masthead get their issues ironed out and Earthrise will be actually worth playing for it's gameplay, not it's "potential".

ive been playing darkfall off and on since release. best game ive ever played and worse dev team i can imagine. sucks but o well im done with AV i wont give them another dime.

i bought ER and havent looked back. its raw. its rough. its unforgiving. it needs to be optimized for sure, but with all that said i love it. the world is the best ive seen in any game, the music is the best ive heard in any game.

im a pvper first and foremost, so the combat worried me. but once i started playing i realized how much strategy will be involved once many skills are purchased and the lag is fixed. the damage modifiers based on range is fkin brilliant and something i havent seen in any other games. im not a crafter and wont craft anything because its too complex for me. u crafters out there should love it.

if you can handle a raw game and enjoy beatifully dangerous and unforgiving worlds you might want to give it a try. if you cry when you server crashes or if you encounter any tech problems than you shoudl stay away from this and every other mmo release, because you cant handle it. my fps are pretty low but the game runs very smooth for me and it will only get better.

Ex long time DF player here to tell you ER is a really cool game. but please dont buy it if you are going to QQ all over it, it needs some time but im already having fun

I wish I could get my money back. People comparing this game to TR and APB should feel bad for sullying those games' name with the comparison, Earthrise is in a class of its own when it comes to being a complete waste of money.

This is coming from a huge sandbox fan, this game sucks.

If this game can float itself for a year and grow and expand and build/fix with a small dedicated (they would have to be) playerbase i suspect this game might be one of those EVE success stories a couple of years from now.

I don't think anyone should feel bad though that its not their cup of tea right now either.

However that doesn't make it the same as some big super hyped over marketed big publisher release, so lets not be over critical.

At least no one's claiming this game is another WoW clone! We can all admit it has that much going for it.

So it appears that the login error is related to the internal keyboard mapping that the game uses. The fix we have now is that if you're in the western hemisphere, you'll have to cut&paste your password into the login screen.

Masthead, get a time machine and go back 2 years, then give Trion a call and ask them how to prepare a game for release.

I remember when both Earthrise and Fallen Earth popped up on the radar, and how people were a little bit dismayed with Fallen Earth, but looking at this now I can say that if none of you liked this release you can still go over and checkout Fallen Earth which seemed to be pretty similar, and much much more polished.

Everything I've read about this game has been negative. My experience being the same.

I got into the beta a couple weeks ago and couldn't get past the loading screen after you've made your character. It would just hanged there. I noticed after reading around this was the issue for a good amount of beta testers. I never found a work around for it due to the frustration of the whole beta key not working debacle and the torrent not being properly seeded.
After reading this article I can't see this game going far... Seems like it needs a good 2 years to get it's self together.

I really wish people would stop buying unfinished games.

It was rushed. Might be worth playing in a few months. There are some very solid ideas that are in game already. Strange actually that they got a lot of big picture stuff (crafting, skill system) right, but some basics, keybinds, are missing.

@fatpanda

I have been in beta since March 3, 2010 so a few days after the servers came up I was in. I have played MMO's since EQ live, I have played every game under the moon. This game gives the player total freedom to do what you want in game. IF you know the game Ryzom and Second Life, it is a combo of the 2. The features are unreal and deep. The animals in game grow, mate, migrate and spawn randomly throughout the map. The animal AI is truly unreal. The game has seasons, and certain vegetation will only grow during certain parts of the year. Some fish bite better during the day while others at night, but both can be caught any time. You can terraform the ground, change it to your needs or imagination. Crafting is the most realistic I have seen yet. You have to gather all the materials and when you put something together you can actually see where the parts go. Its fantastic.
