Sounds like a decent diversion until SWTOR comes out (which will almost surely be later than Spring 2011).

@tristanius

Especially since there was a press release last week stating that it had been pushed back to (tentatively) the end of 2011 :)

I actually started playing PWI last week, following the news items here about the Genesis expansion, and the promise of being able to play a panda barbarian (which I am!). I have to agree, the character creation is awesome, and the graphcis are among the best and most detailed of any FTP 'grinder' I've seen, even rivalling Runes of Magic in places.

Ultimately though, as fun as it is, it is very much a 'Kill 10 Rats' kind of game, and whilst for passing the time when you can't commit to something closer to your heart, there's just too much else going on that's also free to make it justifiable. Still, I'm going to keep it on the hard drive a while and keep tinkering with it in odd moments.

It makes me wonder too; I think the companies importing and westernising games for Europe and America will have to *really* start playing their A game if they're going to compete with all the AAA mmogs that are cascading into FTP land. And I'll be interested to see if that philosophy goes as far back as the grass roots of their countries of origin. These are interesting times we live in!

I'd love to see a Rise and Shiny take on Champions Online, now that it's F2P. Maybe after Free Realms?

@blakerefuge Probably not, since we have a column dedicated to it. Occasionally I will cover games that others cover, but not with a column game.

Thanks for asking though! :)

Isn't the Genesis update for PWI supposed to upgrade the graphics engine and everything?

@Valentina I am not totally sure, but maybe? I'm definitely checking it out when it hits, though.

I wanted to play this game, but it was definitely grindy...

I'm hoping Forsaken World will end up in a better position for "western" gamers.

I enjoy this this game a good bit as a break, and played it a whole lot when I was in university and had very little spending money. Though, admittedly, I collected paper dolls as a child, then graduated to doll making, so the character creator is one of the main attractions. I don't have any high level characters (most I got to was mid eighties), due to that grinding, but I have quite a few little ones. And I'll make a few more to try out the new classes when they come.

The game is grindy, i played when the world was very small, few years ago :). It was posible with very hard grind not to spend real cash. Last year I hears it got very cash shop depending. But they added quite a few things as I see.

I so wanted to play PWI with you, Beau. My week went crazy so I wasn't able to find any good amount of time.

In the time that I had to play, I did notice a heavy grind. I'm the type of player that struggles with the grind at first. But as the levels wear on, I get more devoted to my character and I can handle the grind after that!

One thing that I don't like about the game (though I haven't gotten into it all the way quite yet) is that the initial grind doesn't really feel rewarding. Skills are acquired through a trainer where you just buy the next skill in a line of skills. I want some selection, I want to be different than the next character with my race and class. I suppose this is a lot to ask for as no games have fully implemented this.

Hey, there's a game that I've been playing for the past couple months that has been a real blast. It's called Iris Online. It was released pretty recently. With the latest patch, the servers have been filled to the brim and it really is quite a fun game. There's a fair amount of grind but it's kept me pushing on through the maps. I'd love to see Iris Online in an upcoming Rise and Shiny.

@Kurremkarmerruk I've covered Iris before. It is a neat game, but I really want to find some time to get back to it.

Thanks!

As much as I liked PWI i stopped actually trying to level along time ago at level 78. I am hoping that Forasken World will be much better or that Genesis will get me playing once again.

Ive been playing PWI for a while now, probably just over a year and its probably one of the best F2P MMO's I have played. :)

Forsaken World is also pretty amazing. I got into the BETA and was pretty shocked at how good it was. Im glad they added in the re-directed path that actually allows the player to avoid obstacles. They should incorperate that into PWI too. :)
