Raptr, a social networking app for gamers, has turned its eyes to DC Universe Online players in a recent report. By breaking down player demographics, the site was able to piece together common trends and paint an overall picture of the DCUO playerbase.
So who is playing DCUO (while using Raptr)? The first bit of surprising news is that these gamers aren't necessarily superhero fanatics, at least not according to the other types of games they play. These players didn't tend to have City of Heroes and Champions Online as their other go-to games in the top 10, for example.
Actually, Raptr found that DCUO players are most likely to be into the MMORPG genre as a whole, as well as multiplayer games like Call of Duty: Black Ops and League of Legends. The report speculates that there may be a connection between DCUO's fast action gameplay and these other titles: "While there are a number of MMORPGs listed, it's interesting to see some FPS, and RTS in the mix. This could be because DCUO prides itself in being a deep MMO mixed with action-oriented gameplay more akin to RTS or FPS games."
World of Warcraft and EVE Online were the two biggest MMOs that DCUO players also enjoyed, while these players found themselves stealing time away from WoW and Aion to head over to DCUO for their gaming sessions.

Funny. I play CoD:Black Ops and WoW and a small amount of Eve. I can't stand DCUO or League of Legends. LOL. Guess I throw that study off a bit, eh?

You are right, I'm not the only person in the universe. Neither are the people in their sample size. Just goes to show these "studies" are founded on limited knowledge and are not indicative of what IS. But then, you must be one of those "relativism" types.

This. I've never seen a bigger non-story on Massively, although perhaps it's some sort of ironic observation of how not to run an experiment?
We know CO and CoH don't have huge populations...EVE, WoW, Blops and LoL do. Shocking amirite; it almost seems to me as if..and I'm guessing here, people play *more than one game*.
Excuse me, I need to go have a minor heart attack.

Pointless. They run their job like a psychic. You just try to make things so broad to make others believe. Maybe they like DC comics, maybe they just wanted to try a new MMO, maybe a friend of theirs was going to play so they jumped on, maybe they won 100 dollars at the casino the other night and decided to spend it on this because they were curious. So many jobs in this world that are pointless.

People who play DCUO are also people who have played video games before. Can I have a grant now?

I think that it's safe to say that when any new MMO comes out, if you analyze who is playing it you'll see a lot of people that have WoW and EVE on their top list. cause those are the 2 largest competitors for most modern MMOs. Blizz is what like 11 million subs and EVE topped 1 million subs sometime ago?
I would think (because of gameplay) that there would be more of a correlation between players who lack hack-n-slash with quick rewards than standard MMOs (like those who enjoy Diablo, Torchlight, TQ, Dungeon Siege. etc) but don't necessarily play much MMO cause the progression and combat just aren't fast paced enough.
This is one of the reasons why I like DCUO more than any of the other MMOs, yes I've played a lot of WoW (more recently only on a private server cause of the nice fast progressions and feelings of accomplishment), but it's still a little too slow for me.

Oh and I bet the reason why CoH and CO aren't on the lists is well because Cryptic is a horrible company, and CoH doesn't have a large player base.... Go figure.
I wouldn't touch CO with a ten foot pole.

On the other hand , If you go to Raptr and check the play time stats for DCUO there is a rather disturbing downwards "spiral" happening...and the subs have not even kicked in. It's weekend now, and the normal trend for MMOs is to go up over weekends...DCUO...well it went down...

Some weirdo at Gamestop told me that most DCUO players have either a PC or a PS3. I think he's a conspiracy nut, though.

Have fun with that and when every exception to the rule ruins your stats, don't say I didn't tell you so.

What proportion of MMO players use Raptr? I mean, I've never heard of it and I've been playing these for a while. Would it be fair to suggest that people who play FPS and RTS are more likely to be in the data set than people who don't? Are they all within a certain age group? Are they all on 4chan?
This study isn't really useful for extrapolating meaningful data.

Even if it was, they've ignored the glaringly obvious.
WOW has 12 million + subscribers. Ask new players of any MMO what other games they've played or what game they played before their new one and WOW is likely to be at the top of the list.
Without taking even a rough stab at correcting for this, these statistics are completely meaningless.
