For a new MMO that's supposedly launching this year, we've heard precious little about the tentatively titled PlanetSide Next so far. Today, our knowledge grows by an inch as PlanetSide Universe got its hands on an exclusive picture of one of the new ships of the game, the Reaver.
Like the ships in other screenshots we've seen, this is a model and not necessarily representative of the actual vehicle in-game. Still, it definitely looks like it means business, and evokes the image of modern attack helicopters minus the rotor blades.
SOE's John Smedley has talked up this MMO sequel as having "massive battles on a scale no other FPS will touch." The studio is looking at late Q1/early Q2 2011 for a release window for the game. The first beta testers will be current PlanetSide players, so if you want to get a look at the future, it may behoove you to jump on board the present.

Guys I have to commend you posting all the recent news about Planetside Next.
Please though, get your facts straight:
The pic of the tank in the last article is clearly the NC Vanguard tank. It looks just the same as the original from PS and it's got the NC logo on the side.
*The Plane/hovercraft from todays article is not the reaver, it looks just like the Mosquito from the original title. If Smed told you that's the reaver it is time to start worrying what they are doing to PlanetSide.

This. Definitely the Mosquito.
Reaver had much longer wings with rocket pods, the rockets being the key thing, as they kill tanks. Mosquitos were primarily air superiority, or mowing down the occasional trooper or even light vehicle.
Also the engines raised behind the cockpit are a Mosquito trait, Reaver's were more inline with the body.
Sadly, Rock, Paper, Shotgun also claims this is the Reaver, so it looks like Smed/Sony PR screwed up. Which is a little troubling. Either that, or they are drastically reworking the aircraft, much more so than the Galaxy and Vanguard we have seen so far.
In any case, NEW PLANETSIDE, HELL YES! Bring back the 200v200 battles plz thx la~

Do the quarters refer to calendar or EA's fiscal year? A good sequel to Planetside will give many RvR players another, welcome option for factional PvP.

To all those above, this is confirmed to be the Reaver, straight from the horses mouth. The reason you think it looks like the mossie is because the gun mounting hasn't been done yet.
Please don't rush in to say it is something else without facts, will lead to confusion.

Well, when it looks almost exactly like the old Mosquito, and very little like the old Reaver, so we kind of assume the horses' mouth is misspoke. It is Smed, after all, and has been known to be wrong. So based on the appearance of the aircraft, it would only be logical to assume he was wrong again.
His follow-up quote makes him look like far less of an idiot than we are accustomed to, and reaffirms that it is actually the Reaver, so thanks for pointing that out.

Really? Well, considering MAG is the only FPS game that has gotten 256 people fighting all in one map, that means you're going to have to break that number, and I severely doubt it.
I'd like to see some actual proof it'll work before a claim like that is thrown about and believed.

@DevilSei Ohohohoho, I got quite a laugh from your post. As people have stated before me Planetside could support double what MAG does... 8 years ago.
Smedley is being very cryptic but has hinted that the servers may be able to support even larger numbers in next, nothing in concrete though.

Alright people, I shouldn't have to say "use some common sense", but use some common sense.
Compare the size of MAGs maps to Planetside. Sure Planetside has more players overall, but I am talking about specific number of people in a specific area. Hell, you want to get technical, WoW has more players fighting in one area than MAG.
Other MMOs have had major issues in trying to break 100 vs 100, as in a specific area. So before you lot go and post "Lul mines bigger", how about you try using the space between your ears for a change.

Hi Devil, you apparently did not play PS in it's prime. I distinctly remember many multiple hour stalemates that poplocked a continent fighting over a single base. There were easily 200 players on each side, at the same base, for a nice total of 400 in a single fight. I can't verify exact numbers, but I can say without any doubt it exceeded 256 on several occasions.
Now please kindly go back under your bridge.
