I picked this one up several nights ago, initial first impressions are very good.

Mind you, this is the first time I’ve played an MMO in the opening month; typically I pick them up after they’ve been up for a year or more, sometimes more, so I know they’re not going to evaporate on me. So my surprise that DCMO launched off the pad without some stuff…you know, little stuff, like server markets (a genuine WTFH moment), but I know other MMO’s were fairly bare bones at start.

A massive A+ on the game art and graphics. A genuine drawn and painted look was put throughout the game. Locations like the JLA watch tower are a stunning fusion of living, breathing, OMG-I-can-actually-walk-through-this-thing-in-real-time realism, and yet looks lifted from the pages of a DC comics issue.

So far the massive depth of the DC universe is only partially tapped, with any luck that will be added in bit by bit, but the sense of immersion of Metropolis and Gotham City is complete. Character powers often do feel epic, even in the opening levels…you can almost see the Bwam! and Crack!! on the screen in bold, colorful letters.

No chat balloons, which was a stunner, coming from a CoH veteran, but I’ve been used to that since ‘Galaxies. They need to add it to complete the graphic novel look. But the comic quality cut scenes when taking down a canon character are really nice. There’s a sense of greater plot here. Visually everything meshes well, characters and environments. The recorded dialogue ranges from campy to epic, with great voice performances from Mark Hamill, Gina Torres, etc.

All in all worth loading it up and giving a go, even as we’re watching the paint dry in the JLA.
