"It's a big bet, but it's the right kind of bet to make for EA."
These are the words of BioWare's Ray Muzyka, responding to a conference call to EA investors in which the company admitted that Star Wars: The Old Republic will need to pull in at least 500,000 subscribers to become profitable. This is substantially less than the two million subscriber mark that industry analysts previously predicted.
During the conference call, EA CEO John Riccitiello drew a line in the sand between financial failure and victory for The Old Republic: "At half a million subscribers, the game is substantially profitable, but it's not the sort of thing we would write home about. Anything north of one million subscribers is a very profitable business. Essentially it turns on a dime from being quite sharply negative in terms of its EPS [Earnings Per Share] impact to positive the day the product ships. So it's our view that we can be very successful without fundamentally challenging the market leader [World of Warcraft] because we think we'll probably hit the smaller competitors harder when we get out there. Of course, we have no particular ambition to be a distant number two. Our ambitions are higher than that, but we throttle back a little bit relative to our financial projections."
While Riccitiello admitted that the title has seen "significant development costs," he claims that costs proposed by the public are far higher than the actual costs of The Old Republic's development. He declined to share the actual costs or the number of staff working on the game.
EA also announced that The Old Republic's release date will be in calendar 2011. BioWare has as recently as this January targeted a spring 2011 release. EA's estimate puts its launch somewhere between March 31st and December 31st of this year.

They may get half a million boxes sold. Doubt they will be able to retain half a mil subscribers for any amount of time. It looks/sounds like a WoW clone set in Star Wars.
Same cake, different color icing.

From the screenshots/game play I have seen it looks EXACTLY like WoW but in a different setting. It has almost all of the same systems in place with few changes. The only thing that is different is the massive amount of money they spent on voice overs and the "effects" look prettier.
Almost an exact carbon copy though.

Looks alone does not make it a copy. Read tue forums more and find out that this isn't WoW where you stand in the same spot and mash buttons. Abilities are able to be done on the run...there will be objects that can be used (blown up/ force thrown).
To me that does not equal "WoW Clone" as you deem every game that has come out after WoW must be.

@Rindon Just by your comment i see you know very little about this game. The combat is similar to standard MMO, but improved in several ways. You have objects that your character can interact in the environment (ex: explosive barrels), you have real time melee combat were you see your character parry several enemies, dodging attacks in real time and deflecting blaster bolts. You also have the 1st ever cover system in an MMO and they added physics to combat as well.
Besides that the crafting system is inovative, it's 1000x better than WoW's and i risk to say it will be the best crafting system of themeparked MMO's when it launches.
The quest system is brand new, you have cinematic dialogues, yes with full voice over to all characters in game... and you have choices and according to what you decide to do... that will change the way you play the game till you reach max level. This is valid to all of the game quest features, like flashpoints ("dungeons"), worlds arcs (long chains of quests that go 10+ hours), or even the standard world quest.
You have 8 classes (4 republic, 4 imperial) that have their own personal story... they call that "class quests", and each story is the size of a mass effect trilogy or more, yes you read well, trilogy. Each class have two advanced classes, which makes a total of 16 classes at launch.
Besides that you have atm 17 planets, each one with their own quests, worlds arcs and some even with flashpoints. Raids have been confirmed but not shown yet and they will have a brand new endgame system, what it is? unknown atm.
And theres much much more to reveal.

Sometimes different icing is all you need. If they are following the WoW mantra, then I would suspect that their subsciber base would go much much higher than 500K. esspecially given that its a different genre of game, its going to be exposed to a much wider audience on top of people who play wow already, or other MMO fans. Plus the Star Wars IP is freaking huge - that alone will get a lot of players.

@Rindon That's ridiculous. Any MMO with a login screen is now a WoW clone because WoW has a login screen. As if you could do without... same goes for nearly all the mechanics in WoW. Because truth is, WoW is the absolute minimum you need to have a working MMO. If you didn't notice, many MMOs after WoW added to that. If they didn't hit your taste then that's another matter.

As it stands now, this game seems to be decent, but once again it's going for the same piece of Subscription cake that ever company just wants a piece of. I have a feeling they'll just can the servers once it becomes non-profitable. This is, afterall, EA we're talking about. Whilst they aren't SOE, cue hisses of disgust over another Star Wars game, I have a very bad feeling over what will come to be.
It could be good, do not get me wrong. There were several games before Everquest, then it became the great one, then WoW took the title, and has been running with it since. Each MMO takes the basic formula, the upgrades all the others put forward (which in WoW's case was mostly community created, hur hur), and makes it even more better than before.
Honestly, I'm just sick of Star Wars. The milking of the Clone Wars and EmoAnakin has left me bitter over the entire series. We'll see just what comes from all of this, though. I likely won't be joining this game's masses, unless they offer me something truly gripping and amazing that would make me want to subscribe. Otherwise, it'll just be "another MMO", made exclusively for those that want the Star Wars universe, and can't find a working copy of the Jedi Knight series.

They will easily retain 500K subs for 6 months, after that is anyone's guess.
Posted: Feb 2nd 2011 5:56PM pid said
@DemonXaphan If they have a bare minimum of intelligence then at the end of those 6 months they'll start to add content and keep the product fresh for a total of 12 months at least. At theat point they might hit a critical mass where the game "floats" for it's own weight and then speculations change, again.
