The clip features a tense chase and eventual standoff between a pair of Defiants and a Guardian, followed by the activation of an awe-inspiring rift and the arrival of its nasty denizens. As per MMO custom these days, the entire production is liberally laced with over-the-top violence, and serves to amp up the excitement level for fans of fantasy-related combat. If it wasn't already apparent that Trion Worlds is spending a lot of money on its new RIFT MMORPG, one look at the game's newest trailer should erase all doubts. Up to now, the title's teaser videos have featured in-game footage which, while undeniably pretty, frankly pale in comparison to the CG trailer Trion has just released.

Shiiiny. I just started playing the Beta 5 event and I'm having a blast with it.
I had avoided the temptation of getting to in to this game earlier but since I started playing the beta I'm seriously considering pre-ordering it.

Same. I'd finally started giving up on MMOs, too. RIFT makes this hobby fun again.

Game is a lot of fun so far! Performance specs are slightly too high for my liking, though. I have to play with it on lowest settings (admittedly on a laptop), and while it plays pretty well then, my spell effects are pretty nonexistent.

Now that's much better than the current intro the game plays when you enter the game. Good stuff.

This is stupid. Good? prevails, Evil? is vanquished. Why is it that the "good guys" always win in these trailers. Makes me want to go punch a priest.

Defiants are not "evil", and Guardians are not "good". The differences between them are not a moral one.
Essentially, Guardians follow the Gods, who abhor technology. It's more of a Technology is evil vs. Technology will save us. The Defiants see Guardians as mere lackeys or slaves to "Gods" that will lead the world to its doom. The Guardians see Defiants as infidels/blasphemers. Neither is more 'moral' than the other.

@Haldurson Agreed the lore plays heavily on the concepts between faith and pre-destiny. Both sides present themselves as the "moral" and correct choice, both sides have committed atrocities on the other and both sides blame the other for the state of things. Much of the lore is actually excellently themed in that regard.
Most people think Guardians are good because of their name, religious overtones and the fact that they are colored "whitish blue". Whereas Defiant has a name that sounds "bad" and is colored red. If you play Defiants though, you learn pretty quickly that the guardians failed in many capacities and are so blinded by their faith they believe they can do no wrong.

Sounds like the Star Wars story ... Guardians = Jedi?
Good trailer, but the characters are pretty generic and flat. The art style reminds me of many other MMOs and dungeon crawlers. The first 30 seconds reminded me more of Diablo than a new IP.
It is hard to judge a game from previews and trailers though, so I did grab a beta key from Massively to check out some of the game play. We'll see, the Rift developers have set some very high expectations.

That trailer proves two things...
1) Rogues are over powered and need nerfing
2) Guardians are deceitful, zealots that are trying to destroy the world by opening rifts!
