If I didn't have so many games competing for my attention I would definitely give this another look. Bought it at launch and really enjoyed the ship combat, but the land-based stuff was a chore to get through.

Has ground combat improved any?

Yes, they have completely changed avcom to a more action based system with new skills including brawling and more aoe abilities. Due to this change it is almost impossible to win boarding combat if the opponent is higher level than you.

Also they have not changed the quests much, just added more daily quests and made them more difficult to solo, and PvP is still all about ganking and speed. Other changes include removing 1st and 2nd rated ships from the ship building options, making more super frigates like Heavy Hercules available to other classes besides Privateers and Rats, i remember something about treasure maps and hiring NPCs for missions, but that is something that was introduced recently.

I played for October and November last year, my first and last time (untill now) with the game, and I have to say that the ground combat as fine, absolutely fine. No camera issues, no control issues, it all felt really good. But I've read a lot of comments from experienced players saying the 'avatar combat' sucks, so who knows? :D

This is completely free to play now. No reason not to check it out.

Unfortunately its not really a game for PvE players, because the PvP players can literly block access to PvE if they want to which they reguarly do. If you're a fan of being jumped by higher levels or outnumbered then I guess it doesn't matter.

The only manual Rusty and Flying Labs should be writing is 'How to take a great concept, great game and great community and make the most boneheaded decisions and run it into the ground'.

@Dread
I have to agree with you this game is dead.
Theres too much wrong with the game to even try to begin listing everything that is Fail about it,that would explain why there server populations are pathetically low for a MMO. The server populations give a whole new meaning to the term "massively multiplayer"

The game is extremely new user unfriendly.
Just a few common sense changes would go a long way in improving the game but FLS seems content with having a game population so small that just a handful of dual boxers or crossteamers can control the outcome of the map.

In off peak hours you can play the game for hours and never see another human player.
This quote is worth repeating
